What is This in Centimetres
Ask a Question
It says 2,25m or 8 7/8 ". In a Meccano set for a piece of string, what is the measurement in Centimetres
There are 100cms in a metre so the decimal point (if that's what the comma was meant to be) should be moved two places. (not one).
So 2.25 metres converts to 225cm (not 22.5cm).
I'm still trying to puzzle out what the connection with 8 7/8 " (given as an alternative) is (assuming the " represented inches).
davidstockport when he put it in inches as well I presumed the first one was ment to be mm not meters
heatherduthie It is very confusing, but I'm finding it quite amusing, even though it's making my brain hurt.
I assume the first one is meant to be ‘mm’ rather than ‘m’ which would be 22.5cm. And a quick google of the inches came up with the same
RegularComper90 why do that when you have the lovely members here and wow 20 points
RegularComper90 I did but I tried it and the length wasn't correct and I couldn't fin what this was in cm
Ann1984 I'm not trying to be clever but from what I've seen here if I wanted any help with conversions, most of the lovely members here, as lovely as they are, would be the last people I would ask.
2.25 metres is 225 centimeters , about 90 inches or 8 foot 4" off the top of my head , big meccano piece ?
Golfforall It isn't a Meccano piece, it's a "piece of string" probably for use in a Meccano construction, possibly a crane, from what I recall the string wasn't supplied with the kits (I could be wrong). I'm definitely not wrong about the measurement though, 225 cm (88.6inches) is much closer to 7'4" than 8'4". (easy mistake to make).
minifig290 Oh no it isn't! It is approximately 11.4 inches too long But don't worry about it as long as it works OK the world won't come to an end, and you've plenty of string spare so if the string snaps you might be able to knot it together.
Hope you had enough pieces to complete whatever you were making.
Have they digitalised those Meccano sets yet? (hopefully not).
Golfforall It was late for me too, I often get to sleep by doing mental arithmetic, I fell asleep twice working out where your calculation had gone wrong. (I could see the reason for it though).
I got my first approximate answer by two metres being nearly 6'7" and adding a quarter of a metre, nearly 10".
2.25m is 225cm
The "m" is for meter. There's 100cm in 1 meter so 2.25 x 100 = 225cm
BUT
8 7/8th of an inch is 22.54cm
Ricky6981 Your observations regarding conversions agrees with mine, but that BUT is what is also puzzling me - I cannot see why one measurement of just under 9 inches is offered as an alternative for a measurement (now confirmed by OP as of over 7 foot). Any Ideas?
I've already ruled out VERY thick string.
Just use google to change any measurement into what your looking for. I use it all the time.
Not sure if it's the case in the instance, but I remember reading an interview with one of the creators of Meccano, and they said that they put deliberate mistakes in the Instructions to challenge people and make them solve problems.
More on it here - https://themightywhelk.com/2020/06/18/my-meccano-story-how-i-felt-the-first-betrayal-of-my-life/
And a Quote if you don't fancy the read -
".....So instead he told me something that changed my life. He said that meccano instructions often had mistakes in them. He said that these mistakes were put into the instructions on purpose. The reason they were put in was to challenge young minds to come up with their own engineering solutions and thereby make them into resourceful and capable individuals"
Thanks for the great article linked to, it explained so much, possibly why because I played with Meccano as a child I can put together self assembly furniture with few problems. (if all the parts are included). blacklabrador
davidstockport I guess the trick then is to find someone who was good at Meccano if you are planning a trip to Ikea.
blacklabrador It might possibly be better to find someone with a box of nails and a big hammer.
