Have You Challenged Your Council Tax Band?

Ask a Question

Hi everyone! 🙂

I'm writing a guide on how to challenge your council tax band if you believe it's incorrect.

I would love to hear about your experiences! Have you ever challenged your council tax band? If so, what was the outcome? Did it change? Did it get lowered? Let me know in the comments!

You can ask for your band to be reassessed if you believe it's incorrect - obviously, it could potentially go up or down once it's been evaluated so it's not for everyone! The guide I'm working on will explain how it all works 😀

Don't forget to remind people of the obvious ? If you apply for a re evaluation and every other similar house in the street goes up (which has happened quite a few times) You are not going to be popular with your neighbours !

Yes, this is something people need to be aware of and I will certainly include it! Not everyone should challenge their band unless they believe it to be wrong - I will cover when people should and shouldn't challenge within the guide. We definitely don't want unhappy neighbours!

I haven't challenged as I would be worried in case it went up not down. No need to challenge anyway as it probably all get reviewed to shoot up and pay for Corona

I did this at an old house that had only been built about 10 years before I moved in and it went from D to B. I was paying significantly more before challenging it than someone else on the same street with an IDENTICAL house (built at the same time by the same developer and everything), but since we were in two different post codes they’d been evaluated differently apparently.

Shortly after buying my house (around 20 years ago) I challenged my Council Tax band. I was successful and it was lowered from Band C to Band B.

Many years ago my ex and I challenged ours, there had been some new builds over the road from us, same number of rooms/wc's/bathrooms/bedrooms and were two bands lower. We lost the reason given our house was on a larger plot of land.

I challenged my house band C many years ago and was put into band B, so result. 8 years ago I also challenged the band of the house I live in now (new build), it had been put in band E and after looking at the bands of the other houses in my street thought I should have been put in band D but I had a phone call saying I was lucky as could have quite easily been put into band F! I didn't agree with the decision but there was nothing more that I could do. I also got a friend to challenge hers on a new build as she had been put into band D and I thought it should have been band C, after the challenge she was moved to band C.
