What Children Are Like Today

Just been reading what kids have to day. And I was very shocked. A 4 year old has it's on phone. Another 4 year old has a lap top. Why so young. They do not understand what it is use for. I would not give a 4 year old any of it. It's a case I want I get. I am not saying all children are on the want . When i was that age i was in to books or drawing and colouring. I was happy with it. And other pice i read to day granchildren will not stop at there gran and grandads. Why because it's got no internet and sky. My gran thought me to bake. Sew, cook. Make Jams and pickles . I had very close bound with my gran and grandad. I think is a shame there is no bound now a days. I am not say every ones like it. There seem to be no more family time. What do you make of it and why. 
My grandson spends one day of each school holiday week with me. To date we have completed several school projects, Egyptians and animals near extinction, baked cup cakes, cinema, gardening, tents hung from washing lines and running around them with water pistols, swing ball, bowling at our local bowling alley and lots of other pastimes. He loved visiting the area where his dad grew up, saw his old school and then we sat in the car with sandwiches and a flask of hot chocolate.........magic. When he was with me he never once asked to go on his gadgets even though he brought them along.
Sadly he is now older and it is becoming harder to keep the tech at bay but next half term i told him we are going to do some proper meal cooking and he seemed up for it.
Hi lynibis that sounds fun. My grandad use to do things like that. We went strawberry picking. And the next day made jam. Thats nice you are going to show him how to cook. That will come in handy for him.
Sounds fantastic my Nan taught me how to cook and was alive during the war so we used to sit and listen to her stories, something which my children will miss out on. I think some of my favorite days was when she wound sew clothes for my dolls and make a tent out of chairs and sheets! None of my children have there own tech but I have an iPad and I do let them go on it and a laptop is essential for homework. Last summer my eldest didn't want to go the park because she wanted to watch tv so that was then banned for the rest if the day!!
But when you were that age the world was different. All the top jobs seem to be in tech. My 4 year old does more than i did when i was 4. Our worlds rely on tech nowadays. So long as its balanced with outside world activities then who cares.
im a child of the 90s.. though my parents can afford fortunately, they emphasized to us that if want this or that we have to earn it... i got myself a cellphone with my own salary and not from them.. but i don't mind as I enjoyed much more the bonding timeswe have had and miss them... and I agree to you dear I will not give such gadgets at that early age... probably il let them know such exist but only for limited time..
Hi jande86 yes I was like you if I wanted any thing had to earn it. And if I wanted some thing I had to save for it. I was a child of the 70's and I've seen a lot of change's. We had to say please and thank you. Most children don't say it. The other day I give a friends child a gift. And she just to it she not say thank you. The mother turn to me and she said to me she dos not under stand yet that you had to say thank you. And she is 7 years old. I was shocked.
I think it is about balance. Technology is a big part of children's world's today. I personally don't think a 4 year old should have their own phone or laptop but think that 10 minutes a day, supervised, using an educational app can be beneficial for them. I also think it is important for them to read books, colour in and play with toys. Balance is key. I think it is important for them to send time with their grandparents. My grandad taught me all about his garden when I was little. It shouldn't matter that there is no Internet or sky as they should be going to the park, learning how to bake, reading stories, playing football etc.
We got the Internet and phones when I was a teenager. I spent most of my time reading or talking to people. Children need computer skills and social skills.
MrsCraig I know from your previous posts that you are quite young and I think it is wonderful that you have such a mature and sensible outlook on how to raise children and their needs. You are so right. Children live in a technological age and they will be at a disadvantage if they are not allowed access but yes, they also need to learn social skills and how to interact with people. Grandparents have such a lot of wisdom to pass on.
Lynibis thank you. I spend a lot of time around children as a teacher. I see first hand the impact technology has on them. There is no escape from technology, we even use it to help with their learning and it can really help children with learning difficulties. Children are complex creatures and are so creative and inquisitive and that should be encouraged. My son is still very young but I intend to make sure as much as I can that he has a balance between the two and that he spends lots of time with his grandparents.
iPhones, iPads, Laptops, Tablets, etc. These electronic devices now serve as somewhat of a nanny and that parents know their kids to keep quiet.
it is good children are able to use technology but they don't need their own phone at 4. they just don't and reading is good for them
