Do You Do Christmas Stockings for Your Children?

Ask a Question

We've always done Christmas stockings for our kids, but a friend of mine said they don't do stockings anymore as it's 'old fashioned' (they still have young kids).

I'm not the biggest fan of Christmas but I do enjoy the kids piling on our bed opening their little bits in the stockings.

What do you put in your stockings?

I don’t have children of my own, but I put together stockings for a friend’s children each year. I usually include a small festive soft toy, fluffy socks, sweets, a small craft project, festive small toys such as spinning tops, colouring books and something to colour them with and a breakfast treat (they open them immediately before breakfast, so I’ll add a breakfast bar or mini pot of jam or Nutella etc depending on what the individual child likes but doesn’t usually get for breakfast). It can vary a lot each year though!

I’ll also add things tailored to each child, such as a mini makeup palette for the one that wants to be a makeup artist or mini recipe books for the one that wants to be a chef.

I typically spend around £10-£15 per child on stockings but get bits throughout the year when they’re on sale.

cocolgooh thats a really lovely thing to do for your friends children 😊 I love the mini jam/Nutella idea. I dread buying stuff for stockings, my oldest is 11 so he's not really bothered about little toys now, I think I'll be getting some deodorant and smelly bits etc for him. I've got a 7 year old boy & 18 month old daughter too so I'm stuck for them 🙈

PinkElephant26 My friend’s oldest son is 12 this year but he loves Among Us so I got him a mini crewmate soft toy with a Santa hat on it. Headphones is another thing I’ve included in stockings for the older ones before too!

For the 7 year old, if he’s into Lego type toys Poundland have some Lego style kits (although they aren’t Lego brand) in for £1 where you make a car or boat etc. Home Bargains had some in last year for a similar price too but I don’t know if they do this year. My friend‘s kids had fun with them last year!

For the 18 month old, bath crayons were a huge hit when my friend’s kids were that age. Light up bath toys too. One in particular was scared of water but he loved getting to play with them in the bath. The paper was always fun for them too, although I guess you can’t just put paper in 😂

I haven't done him one before as he was too young, but now he is three I am going to do him one. My mum gave me the stocking that used to be mine when I was young, so I will be using that for him. Because of him age I will just be putting in some sweets, some small toy cars, maybe some stickers, a book, that sort of thing.

I don't think they are old fashioned. I think they are a lovely tradition. Lots of people do Christmas eve boxes, but I won't be doing one

MrsCraig oh that's so nice for your son to have your stocking! I agree, I think it's a great tradition and hope my kids will do stockings for their kids. This year will be my daughters 1st stocking but I'm thinking some little bags of dairy free choc buttons, a book, and a little toy. She still won't understand it all and probably be more excited about the wrapping paper!

My 7 year old will probably be looking for a playstation or bike in his stocking 😃

PinkElephant26 you will need a pretty big stocking for him!

My son won't really understand it either so I'm not going overboard, just a few small things.

I think stockings are a big part of the Christmas tradition, my son is grown up and I love doing a stocking and he loves opening it, it's part of our Christmas tradition, it always has a chocolate orange and other bits and bobs 🙂

My children are grown up now but saying that they still want a stocking. It was great when they were younger because they would open the Christmas stockings before breakfast and then waited for the presents under the tree. As for gifts, when they were younger it was mainly small toys and sweets and as they got older beauty care and underwear and chocolate.

Yes, I love doing stockings. Usually small fairly cheap things to open and entertain them before breakfast. It's really exciting for children to wake up to something in their room. When my eldest was about 3, he came running into our room and said Father Christmas had been and brought his stocking up (we'd left it by the fireplace the night before). He was more excited to tell us about it being in his room than he was about opening it!
