Can Covid19 Statistics Ever Be More than a Guess?

Other

I am not sure how they can ever get a true picture of the scale of this crisis. People are being told to stay home and not go to doc or hospital, or even ring 111 unless they become critical. Therefore when they recover, who is to know how many have had it unless there is a report line, and even then some people will misdiagnose themselves.

Looking at today's headlines there seems to be a huge discrepancy in figures from the USA and our own. They have 1 death in 56.8 cases and we have a staggering 1 in 15.8, it was 1 in 20 a few days ago.

I find it so difficult to understand how some can get it so mildly and others badly or even die, even with no underlying conditions. They also keep saying 'tested positive' but it is never made clear as to whether that means they are carrying it or suffering from it.

EDIT: Someone infected indirectly by touching a door handle could ultimately end up with milder symptoms than someone who inhales an infected person's cough, experts say.

And this is because it gives the immune system more time to get a handle on the infection before it gets overwhelmed and symptoms start to show.

Just found that online.

I don't understand why there wasn't a web page that logged personal details and a symptom selection to get some realistic nationwide data - even if nothing further was suggested. (like a go to hospital message) We both felt pretty rotten on Feb 28th and there was nobody to give advice. Looking back, we were both seriously unwell but as you mention in your edit I believe we were at the beginning and it was a contact infection rather than a cough-inhalation case. We won't be part of the data until we can self test so the numbers reported isn't accurate. The latest info I heard is that if a person has had the virus they will only be immune for a few months......until it mutates I guess.

That's a great idea and I wouldn't think it would have cost very much to set up.

Your last sentence is a bit scary, we could be in isolation for the rest of our lives.

I am glad you are better. It is seriously scary to be seriously ill and know the place you would normally go might be the very place that could kill you.

Lynibis I haven't seen family face-to-face since 28th as we have a Cystic Fibrosis child within the family so it has been a really scary time. Stay safe, yourself. x

So sorry to hear that angemski, I can't imagine how fearful this thing is for you. I live alone as you know and consider myself a truly blessed and lucky person. I am not assuming I will never succumb, but presently I have everything I need. I have two pensions, plenty of food, warmth, and both neighbours have been wonderful. If the worst I suffer is loneliness then I have nothing to complain about. Like all of us I worry for my family but they are obeying the rules too so fingers crossed. Keep smiling, keep well and post whenever you can. X

My understanding is that because the virus is such a new strain, it is not possible to know the length of time immunity will last. There has (or had) only been one case of a person contracting it for a second time, and even then it might have been a false negative that caused that result.

I read an article from a Chinese doctor and he said there are 2 kind of corona virus out there. One is the ancient cause milder symptoms and the mutated version.

The problem is that the symptoms are very different and they also really similar to flu or allergy, asthma.

The government decided to not test from the beginning, so we do not know the real numbers.

Doctors and nurses still do not have the protective clothing.

People did not vote for HOPE....they chosen the heartless to lead...Just think about how they talk about it...daily...

"People will going to die"...instead of we will try to save everyone.

Just think about it how contagious this virus is, if people can not go near to the dead body...

I suspect theres perhaps alot of people who have had it mild, recovered and dont realise. We went to a gig in early Feb & a couple days later I developed a sore throat/cough & felt a bit achy for a couple days. My OH got to too, In the 20 odd years we have been together this was only the 2nd time hes been sick enough he stayed in bed. Even now hes still complaining of nasal drip. Our eldest also had a cough for about a week. Thought at the time we just had a nasty cold, Now in hindsight I'm wondering if we had it.....

The actor Idris Elba I read said his only symptoms were body aches & a headache on the day he tested positive. Then he felt better.

Just seen that the US figures are worse than China but the Chinese figures are unlikely to be true, they did nothing for a the first month or two until people started dropping and almost a million landline accounts have been closed in China since the outbreak and over 20 million mobile phone accounts which is the reverse of typical behaviour this time of year. China also records the long term health condition on death certificates which means many won't be recorded. Basically China does what it thinks makes China look good internationally.

I'm no doctor but one of the symptoms is a reduced or no sense of smell and taste and this typically means a zinc deficiency and it seems the body does need a lot of zinc to fight the virus and will be depleted fast if you have it so make sure you have zinc rich food and supplements if you think you have it. The body can't store zinc for very long so its not something you have a large reserve of.

I believe the malaria drug they have used in the far east to slow the virus replication in the body works with zinc supplements but it is still beneficial to take zinc on its own.

BonzoBanana Omw! I agree with your views on this but it't the zinc issue that shocked me. Me and OH think we had it but obviously unconfirmed - he became anosmic and I couldn't taste anything for a couple of days. By chance, I had a supermarket delivery - six bananas - and over the next couple of days we could both taste and smell. I can certainly vouch for the fact it had good results.

Bananas are high in zinc for fruit but many other foods have far more. From what you have stated I suspect you have genuinely had/have the virus. To be honest there are estimates as high as half the population having it just the majority have no symptoms at all. Anyway best of luck with your recovery.
