Daughter Just Brought up Interesting Subject

We were talking gcse and she mentioned a book whice the teachers are allowed to say the word out loud (n***er)

the book is one of my favourite of mice and men and completly forgot about it.

she went on to say our long before someone is going to bring that word up as racist.

i didn’t think and yes with today’s snowflakes it’s only a matter of time someone will complain.

Have you read this book and enjoy

I read this book a long time ago, if I remember this book does slightly address racism I think it would be a shame as it opens up debate

The trouble is, we can't go back and censor every single book for words that in 2020 are deemed unacceptable.

I tried to read the book you mention but couldn't get on with it so gave up.

I am currently reading a set of Wilbur Smith books which are set in the 1600 and 1700s and as they are mainly seafaring, slave ships are part and parcel of the stories.

However, reading the real nitty gritty of what it was like has given me far more insight and sympathy than all the demonstrations of recent months, by people who never suffered it themselves. Where we came from centuries ago is of no consequence, but rather how we live our lives today.

She worried now how her history lessons are going to be as she decided that’s what she wants to do. A degree in history but everyone seems to be offended by it. The group of kids that have taken it has less then halved what would have taken 15 20 years ago

Ann1984 OMG what is the world coming to. History is so varied and the history of each country so different but also intertwined. It knows no barriers and we cannot close our eyes to the past if we want to learn for the future. What about the environment? We have to learn about the wrongs of history in order to put our planet right. Also it is currently black history month and we are being encouraged to know about that history too. I hope she doesn't allow anyone to persuade her against what she wants to do. You all know how passionate I am about history and some of the stories you learn are totally unbelievable and could be fiction. Here is a little snippet for her to look up.

There was a King who died after less than 2 years of marriage. His queen married her steward in secret as she was sent off to be an old maid at age 20. She rarely saw her son from her first marriage, next King. She and the steward had about 4 children and eventually due to various happenings their grandson became King hence starting the Tudor line.
