it used to to be something I wanted to do, but it has definitely become less appealing as I get older, and the amount of money to get a permit and hire a guide is ridiculous
is this something you have done? Or something you want to do?
Yep...queuing in the ‘death zone’...minimal oxygen...carrying a heavy backpack full of climbing and survival gear...just waiting and waiting...Definitely something I wouldn’t find appealing
£8,100 just for a permit to go up there? Thats absolutely nuts, especially when you have to queue at the top
Yes it’s completely bonkers - people are risking their lives as they wait around for their turn, and paying for it
It’s ridiculous to make people queue in freezing conditions, the Nepalese government should be ashamed. Ive heard it’s disgusting conditions making the climb with rubbish and feces on the routes. Just a money spinner!
It is indeed. Apparently there’s loads of dead bodies up there also, as it’s not always possible to find missing people. It’s very sad
If I had the money and lots of free time I would consider it. There is a reputable UK company that does an Everest Summit climbing trip and they charge over £45,000 for a two month trip - most of this is to acclimatise to the altitude. They only take experienced climbers that have been on other trips with them. So they'll know if you have the fitness and skills to attempt the climb. The main route is not technically difficult compared to other mountains, but being above 8,000m, avalanches, freezing temperatures, being caught out by changes in weather, etc is obviously a risk. Although, they clearly need to reduce the number of permits issued.
oh yes, too many permits issued for people who probably haven’t trained for it - and even the experienced climbers have had issues. Very sad
No way.....Cold and hard to breath and climbing and climbing on the ice...
There is an other mountain, the second highest in Pakistan, that is even harder and more people die on it, but I just think the people who want to climb it, they want to die.
Yes possibly - either suicidal or willing to die trying, and paying for the privilege to do so. I guess it’s their lives, so it’s their choice
if i had the money , i would of done it , not fit enough now , so out of the question now ,
i have trekked in Peru at 7000m , and climbed Kilimanjaro , nearly 6000m ....that was cold -20c , nothing like Everest of course .......
for those who dont understand the attraction , its a bit like doing a jig-saw .....some like it some cant see whats the point ,
doing a marathon ,
swimming the channel ,
bike riding John o`groats to lands end
sail around the world ,
etc etc
