Keeping The Deals Tip-Top!

Ask a Question

Personally I would feel guilty for accepting points for posting deals without even a basic price check.

Ooooooh Icarus! get back down here - that one's far too hot. ๐Ÿ˜ฑ I applaud your motive but it'll never fly. ๐Ÿคฃ

Is it trying to address a problem that doesn't exist do you think?

angemski well I don't want to ruffle any feathers! I had a comment from one of the founders today and I really want this site to succeed. The only real criticism I see is around this topic.

I came across a chat post which I can't find now but a user named Dread was mentioned and I read into it & saw that Dread felt the gaming scene here was plagued by mediocre deals.

Dread hasn't posted since 2017 I don't think. We cannot mention a certain deal site where I used to call home but the deals are kept sharp by the comments and competitiveness.

Would love to help build a gaming community here by putting together a team that only posts razor sharp deals..

saintsmoney I remember his thread and I know the site that must not be named. ๐Ÿ˜„ I have to agree that things could be sharpened up but I feel sure the team are stretched as it is so it could only work if more mentors were available. Yes we could all be a little more eagle eyed but if it resulted in reporting regularly then it would make me feel like a snitch - don't forget...... people get over zealous too!

angemski yes you absolutely have a good point. I also get that snitch feeling but points are rewarded for making reports so it must definitely help the site. If I see a deal in new with no image I first find an image for the person and offer it to them in the comments, if they don't use it within an hour I make the report. That way I don't feel guilty ๐Ÿ˜‚

We need to be giving shoppers the ability to brag to their friends about how much money they saved because they know of a little website called LatestDeals

And then their friends will turn up here ๐Ÿ˜‚

No dude. Some of the cheaper deals are links to ali Express or similar which I'm not sure if are allowed on here anyway and some people don't like to use those kind of sites.

It would need to be specified that the better deal is from a reputable site, is available within a similar timeframe and cannot be from a source that's not allowed here.

How about then?

saintsmoney Lol then? Why doesn't the new person just post it as their own deal and get the points that way?

GlitchHunter they do. But they also get the extra 100 for helping to improve the site. It would be an incentive for users to price check other people's deals & have them replaced if there's better out there. It also wouldn't cost the site because the points given have been reclaimed.

I'm making this up as I go along btw ๐Ÿ˜‚

saintsmoney I can tell you haven't quite thought it through. Good idea trying to make it better but then it wouldn't be fair on first poster who really thought they had a good deal.

GlitchHunter it is in our interests that this site succeeds. I wouldn't object to losing 100 points in this case. Would you?

saintsmoney I personally wouldn't object to this principle providing there was a time-limit on undermining the original.

angemski I see. So we would have say 24 hours in which to prove the better deal? After that it stays no matter what?

Sounds fair ๐Ÿ‘

saintsmoney I would object if I posted what I believed was a great deal and then someone comes and steals my points. I'd be mad. I think angemski has a point about the time limit thing.

GlitchHunter now we're getting somewhere ๐Ÿ˜‚

Yes you would be mad, so would I.. but mostly at myself for not doing the homework ๐Ÿ˜‚

Would you be more mad if the site was no longer able to offer rewards?

I am in no way criticising the deals here, I haven't done the research. This is based purely on what I read in the comments/chats.

In fact I've seen some great deals here. But we need to be giving shoppers a shopping addiction (not literally๐Ÿ˜‚ )

saintsmoney Although I'm not a points gatherer - I wouldn't like it very much If I posted a deal then after someone found a deal that hadn't been around when I'd posted my deal I was penalised. I also wouldn't like it if a deal I posted when I knew the thing could be bought for 4p less - when the deal I posted had next day delivery from a seller who I know is reliable. WHO DECIDES what is a better deal! The cheapest deal isn't always the best.

davidstockport yes all valid concerns. Each time a report came in it would need to be checked and a decision made. If it's a clear cut case of the original poster not bothering to perform even a basic check before posting then it could be considered a disservice to LD, and they forfeit 20 of their 100 points, which are then given to the finder of the better deal.

I have faith in the people running things, they clearly know what they're doing.

This was just a chat post - nothing serious. Interesting points made though

saintsmoney I don't believe the people running things even think they've got things perfect, and would love there to be an answer to many things that could be improved. Anyone "running the show" on anything soon realise that most problems were once the answer to another problem, and the answer to that problem will probably be the next one.

I'm sure they are still working on getting a "good balance" but even if and when they do get it perfect someone will come along and rock the boat.๐Ÿ˜€

GlitchHunter I have to agree with you on that one - a genuine poster submits, what they genuinely believe to be, a good deal - then you get a 'terrier' who is determined to steal the deal. Not a comfortable atmosphere unless the better deal is a substantial percentage lower.

There would have to be some way to make it fair for both parties. Because the first person may not know where else to look for a better deal. They could be new or inexperienced or they don't have the apps or the vouchers. Then how could they get a better deal than the one they already posted?

I think original deal posted gets their 100 points. Cheaper deal stealer would get 20 points. Because what if they weren't looking for that deal until they saw it posted first?

Original poster gets to keep 50 points, deal stealer gets 150 for posting the better deal

GlitchHunter You're perhaps forgetting that the deal stealer wouldn't get any points if someone had posted it first, if you meant "mentioned it" then it's up to the one mentioning it to "post" the better deal before anyone seeing his mention did so. But as I've said elsewhere the best deal isn't always the lower priced one. It can even depend on where the purchaser lives, someone might live close enough to "click and collect" FREE whereas someone else, living further away, might need to pay a hefty delivery charge.

I agree with what your saying. I see deals where something is claiming rrp at say ยฃ50 and the item is reduced to ยฃ25. But a quick google and other sites are selling same product at ยฃ20. Its not really a deal then. I always try to check prices elsewhere before posting ๐Ÿคฃ

Mmmm. The person finding the cheaper deal would then get double points...200. I think it would cause a lot of resentment and adversity with avid deal hunters trying to outdo everyone else's deals in order to, in effect, steal their points. I think most people post deals with good intentions and do not have the time or inclination to check if the deal they post is the best.

Lynibis I agree with you and feel that the site would only be enjoyed by deal-snipers who possibly have more time to be able to search for undercut prices. I don't deny that some deals are poor but to create a cut throat platform would destroy some of the fun that is evident here. It's bad enough that some members have their posts regularly reported as 'expired' when they are not so imagine the outrage if the points were stripped and given away.

saintsmoney How would you deal with the deal stealer? Would you protect his or her profile? because, I'm guessing that once they undercut and the deal becomes theirs........their profile is clearly shown. Would they be able to cope with the vilification that would undoubtedly come their way? (had to play Devil's advocate)

angemski to start with I would refer to them as deal improvers not deal stealers ๐Ÿ˜‚ I posted 4 video game deals today, I spent around an hour trying to make sure they're the best deals around. I invite anyone to price check the 4 deals to see if they can be bettered. If someone can improve on one of them then I'd say this whole idea is unfair as I put the time in to check first.

This was a conceptual chat post aimed at encouraging others to help fill the site with the very best deals out there.

You did hint that this was a taboo subject, please warn me if I'm talking myself into trouble! ๐Ÿ˜‚

Personally it wouldn't bother me either because I always make sure whatever I share is a fair price and isn't from a section that could be undercut - from suppliers we shall not name. I just feel that encouraging deal improvers/snipers could change the site to a point of losing the genuine friendliness. What you are suggesting could potentially make this a clinical site and the problem with clinical is, after a while, it becomes boring. You have to know that I'm the person who gives back all the poker money at the end of the evening spent with friends - I just haven't got that killer instinct. ..........and as for you talking yourself into trouble ๐Ÿ˜‚ I'm guessing you don't really give a rat's derriere about getting into trouble. ๐Ÿ˜† ๐Ÿ˜‚ ๐Ÿ˜œ

Back to the matter in hand, this will be the only post from me on this subject as I have realised this site is what we make it, and rather than address it here in chat, it would've been better to just get on with doing my part.

Hi Jimmy

I just tested price checking one of your 4 video game deals and found a better price within two minutes. With Video Games the retailers respond to each others price cuts almost immediately as itโ€˜s such a competitive space, continuously undercutting each other, often within hours. Itโ€™s very difficult as a dealhunter to keep on top of that.

About a year ago I used to post a lot of the most popular video games on LD - I found I had to price check each deal on at least four different price comparison sites plus one or two other specific retailers to be sure I was posting the cheapest deal. Even then people would say itโ€™s cheaper on eBay.

Including posting up the deal that took about 10-15 minutes per deal. It was dull and tedious work.

If I didnโ€™t do a thorough price check I found my deals being continuously undermined by one or two other members with seemingly nothing better to do than try to snipe at every video game deal I posted.

Unfortunately itโ€™s not a level playing field, researching and posting a deal takes ten minutes, but criticising it with a โ€˜cheaper hereโ€™ comment (typically only by a few pence) or โ€˜lousy gameโ€™ comment takes two minutes or less.

I got tired of it.

Johnny this comment sums the whole subject up nicely, thanks for taking the time. Honestly, I changed the whole title and description to this chat post after realising it wasn't helping - only causing division - I see you have over 10K deals posted! Very impressive. You're the person that would know best so I will be listening to the pros around here. I got some more PS4 games to post today, trying to keep most of them under ยฃ10. Spacemaniac posts some good ones. I asked if I could add some to my PS4 super chat but didn't hear back yet. I was thinking of trying to cover all 4 platforms - PS4, XBOX, Switch & PC by just keeping the deals coming and linking them to the corresponding superchat posts but as I'm new here I don't know if it will help build the gaming scene, it's just an experiment.
