I have never been a smoker and I was devastated to find out my grown up son was a smoker as my step dad had emphysema.
I was even more shocked to find out that a packet of 20 cigarettes cost over £10, which for me would be a good reason to give up smoking but for others is an opportunity to make money with smuggling on a big scale, as demonstrated by this article

Are you a smoker ? Or ex smoker and do you have any tips for giving up ?
My son is trying a vape.
Ex smoker. A will to suceed and a personal reason to do so aka needs come from self not well intended others.
MelissaLee1963 I think that's the hardest thing for others to accept, I had to accept my son choice to smoke and once I stopped nagging that's when he starting vaping 
beccatavender I practise hypnosis and would never work wih anyone who was being sent along by somebody else.Change happens from within as well as good example of course.
Remind the smoker how much money they are "blowing" away and could they not choose chewing gum instead and save the difference between the two products.
Ex smoker.
Choose your last ever cigarette day.
Buy your last packet of 20. Smoke just one.
Throw all the rest away, tearing each cigarette to threads. Remove temptation.
Never buy another packet, nor cadge a cigarette from anyone else.
That's it. You've stopped.
It's easy when you actually want to stop.
Johnny I don't think my son really wants to stop, he says smoking helps him relax he is looking at vaping as a lesser evil as like most smokers he is aware of the health risk. Neither his Dad or I have ever smoked.
Ex Smoker I probably started at about 13-14 year old and smoked for over 30 years, Cold Turkey worked for me.
