Dogs on Vegan Diets

Ask a Question

https://metro.co.uk/2020/10/22/lewis-hamilton-faces-criticism-over-dog-roscoe-vegan-diet-animal-experts-13464619/

Lewis Hamilton put his bulldog on a vegan diet a few months ago, and this has drawn some concerns, although I know some breeds do fare well on a vegetarian diet (e.g. Tibetan mastiffs, who used to live with the monks in the temples)

Have you ever put your dog on a vegan diet? Would you consider it?

No, I won't put my dog on a vegan diet as they are not herbivores like rabbits. I would give a dog a balance diet of both plant, and meat. They are not carnivores like cats are. Some dogs don't work like police and farm dogs do so they don't need extra protein but if there is a bowl of protein rich cat food they will go for it in a nanosecond. A vet trained nutritionist would have to be involved if trying to make you dog go vegan. If a person wants to go vegan that's cool but don't force dietary choices and beliefs on the dog.

Not got a dog but as an administrative on a Facebook vegan page I know many people have long term and very healthy vegan dogs, there is more of a problem with cats, but even there some people manage it

People are putting cats on diets free of meat? But cats don't digest plant matter well and need essential nutrients that only meat can provide. Unless the cat is a full-time indoor cat there is the option for the cat to move out and setup home elsewhere where the food is more to it's liking.

Not sure the dog will not end up eating him...

I can not have a dog, because I am allergic to them, but would not put any on the broccoli diet...

Not sure if you know but many people who have allergies to dogs can have certain breeds where their fur is more like fleece than hair, one the "labradoodle" a poodle/labrador cross, was actually "concocted" as a guide dog for blind people who have a dog allergy.
