Would You Eat Lab-Grown Meat?

Ask a Question

If it was proven to be safe, or at least not to have serious side effects, I would have no problems with it

Isn't that what some of these meat substitutes are? I mean isn't Quorn some sort of fungus derived meat substitute grown in a factory environment. I have no issues with it, rather that than killing some animal. I do eat meat but for some foods like chilli's I find a meat alternative like quorn fine and I do feel guilty about eating meat I must admit so I go vegetarian or vegan for some meals. If I'm in wetherspoons I have their vegetarian breakfast rather than their normal breakfast. I really like their vegetarian sausages and it doesn't feel like I'm sacrificing anything to go with the vegetarian meal. I find mushrooms actually a very good meat substitute especially if cooked in olive oil.

I love mushrooms, and tbh there’s a lot in the fungi family that have a lot of ‘meatiness’ to it, better than what other substitutes do (such as seitan, which is just gluten)

hspexy That's basically what our flesh is, a sort of fungus which is why fungal infections are so hard to shift. Plants, animals and fungi branched off at the same point thereabouts but animals started creating organic mechanisms within the fungus. Much of the research into meat alternatives is trying to make fungi mimic the properties of meat more like Quorn.

Would more than likely end up eating it somewhere along the line, whether I intended to or not. Thing is very few of us know exactly what goes into the different foods we eat and personally I'm OK with that

If I really had to. I love meat and if there was a way to have it without needing the animals to be slaughtered, and other environmental impacts, then I would go for it

Yes definitely, it's the next best thing to going vegetarian. This kind of industry is always heavily regulated.

I mean we are kind of already eating lab-grown stuff in a way because of all of the chemicals that go into food. If the food would be healthy and safe to eat then I would have no problem eating it!

Yeah, why not? If it helps keep meat available, if it tastes the same, no more expensive...

Yes, I agree. The only thing that would stop me would be if there were side effects I couldn’t live with, or that it lacked the nutritional value I usually get from standard meat

Yes I would. I really think there needs to be some big investment here. As I get older I feel more and more guilty of eating meat. Having to tell my children where meat comes from is sad. Technology should be able to solve this problem and stop the suffering.

I believe so too. That being said, I do think it’s important for people to know where meat comes from, including the slaughtering process, as it will teach them not to be wasteful. I was always taught to eat everything, and not waste even a grain of rice, as a lot of work goes into cultivating it

It actually wouldn't. Real meat would still exist while the fake one costs more (and it really does!) so if I'm between feeling guilty for eating meat or eat only fake meat then I just wouldn't at all.

Suffering exists in many ways and that sadly will never end but animals like chicken, pigs, cows, etc have always been food for people. So, if you don't want to feel remorse then simply don't eat it.

No I wouldn’t. I don’t trust the Government as they all lie and cheat and am surprised that anyone else trusts these buffoons either.

I certainly don’t trust them enough to make a ‘lab-grown meat substitute’ that may or may not have side effects, serious or otherwise. (What do you class as a non-serious side effect? Green wee, hair loss?)

I do eat and enjoy meat, I know where it comes from and it doesn’t bother me. What I don’t eat is all the processed foods. I don’t eat anything I consider ‘ready chewed or reformed’ such as burgers, sausages, chicken nuggets or anything like that as I believe that they contain all sorts of additives (& other things) I would not want, or choose, to eat voluntarily. If my meal contains meat then it should be real meat.

tbh most things are marketed as something which they probably are not, like a lot of vegan and vegetarian foods when the companies started out, and when they get called upon the issues, the may try ‘sort’ it out. Most companies, government backed or not, do things by trial and error, and the more we live in modern society, the more likely we will be eating processed foods. It’s not like we can realistically return to the foraging that our ancestors used to do (although now and again I do forage berries, etc., preferably in the country side, away from pollution)

I suppose we already eat chicken which is factory farming and our cows are impregnated by controlled sperm not natural mating.

This is true in many cases but with chicken I think it depends where you buy it from, we certainly have farms where you can watch the chickens out in the fields on a daily basis - free range eggs & chicken etc.. Locally I would also disagree with impregnated cows because in the field at the back of my garden we have a herd of cows. Earlier in the year the bull was in with them for more than a month to ensure the subsequent pregnancies, nothing unnatural there. I think it depends on who owns the cows and where you are in the country, perhaps due to an ever increasing human population we don't have room for natural farming anymore? 🐞

Yes there are all sorts going on in modern farming, and most of which has been sanctioned so that it can feed the masses. Sounds sad, but there is hardly anything we do these days that is not touched by mankind, some good, perhaps most bad lol. So might as well roll with it

To be honest, I don't see why I wouldn't. It seems to be beneficial that you could still enjoy it without harming any animals. So yes, I would.
