Should England Go Back into Lockdown? Yes or No?

Ask a Question

Just curious as to whether people think England should be going into another lockdown to save Christmas.

A friend asked me to answer with just Yes or No, no comment or opinion, this morning and it was pretty hard.

Comment Yes or No below.

Yes. I think the original lockdown was lifted too soon, and wasn't enforced as well as it should have been, so now another full lockdown is necessary.

No. The economy is getting completely screwed. People are suffering from non-covid related illnesses. These people are not collateral damage.

There is too much focus on the cases and not deaths. If you test more people, then you will of course get more testing positive. Let's have a proper analysis of the number of deaths: age, geo, co-morbidities etc... I keep hearing follow the science. Even scientists cannot agree on what the best way forward is. They have got so much wrong thus far! Let's have a broader view of this.

Of course, anyone in a job would look to be working from home as much as possible right now. Happy days. But what about those who have lost or cannot find a job! It's grim right now.

At the end of the day all lives are precious, we are all adults so can make our own choices. I do not need a Government to decide for me thank you.

I agree with you. I think the vulnerable should continue to shield themselves if they wish to do so, but those who are fit and healthy should get back to some normality.

Ceebers Hundreds of people are dying each day from this. I disagree that lockdown isn’t the answer because people need to work. And with the whole economy over lives concept. I think the more important point here should be that the government should provide more support and more structure and clarity to the restrictions. Protect people’s health and their finances.

RegularComper90 what if the vulnerable are part of those who can’t find work, what do they do?

lornaae Quite how do you think they can do both? This support is funded by working people. It's not the government's money anyway.

Vulnerable people have the same channels of support as everyone else.

What about those people who have paid in loads of tax (Ltd Director; that was me) who gets no support. Nada. We have to stand on our own two feet to look after ourselves and our health. No Government is helping right now. They are hindering.

RegularComper90 Ceebers I'm in agreement with you both. I think we need to learn a way of living with this. Constant lockdowns are not a good long term option imo they will only end up causing more harm to people in the long run than the virus itself.

Ceebers The Economy getting screwed is down the government. 12 billion Track and trace not needed and them funds could be used more appropriately

Yes, for a month and enforce the fines they keep telling everyone they will get. Some of those who disobey the rules need to either catch it or loose someone close, then they'll wished they'd stayed at home.

I think the government are aware they are being heavily criticised for the (predominantly Northern) localised lock downs, while cases continue to rise in London. It will also be the case that people will not be prepared to stick to the rules over the Christmas period and retail will also suffer massively. If they have a four week lockdown, it may bring the figures back to a more manageable figure for the NHS. Shops could reopen for the December rush and families may then be able to spend Christmas together.

No. Lockdowns cause far more harm than good, not just to wealth but to one's health also. And the more people out of work, just think what could potentially happen to the NHS.

Such a question can not, nor should not, be answered with a simple "Yes" or "No" The shortest possible answer should perhaps be "if necessary".

I honestly don’t know what to think. If we go into a lockdown for 4 weeks and open up again in December then will we be in this situation again in January/February?

Most probably yes! If peeps are mixing and mingling then I cannot see how you can curb this. It's a conundrum. And I think with Christmas on the horizon, people will most definitely be mixing. It's what people naturally do. If you have elderly relatives, this may well be their last Christmas to celebrate with them. You try telling someone to say home. I do not think so.

Add in the Winter flu season at a time when hospitals are typically at 80% capacity anyway, its tricky.

I think we are in for a long winter....

I live in Ireland and we are coming to the end of our first week of a second lockdown Getsome. The government have been quite honest in saying that this lockdown is to try and reduce numbers to a manageable level for the Christmas period, so people can have some level of normality in December. I think the reality of an upsurge of figures in the new year is a given.

There has been significant reduction in covid cases in my area this week, which is positive

The lockdown will be worse in Jan/Feb if people try to have a normal Christmas.

RegularComper90 Indeed it has. Boris did not instil confidence delaying his press conference by 2hrs and 48 minutes.

The government need to have a better plan and quick.

I have my reservations about Lockdowns, currently in Wales we are on day 8 of a Firebreak lockdown and so far positive test rates have continued to rise sharply . Don't really see things improving that much now (thou I could be wrong) as next week schools are back , and everyone will be out and about back on the school runs. Prior to this we have had local lockdowns in some areas since early September , initially rates fell but soon started to increase again drastically .

I'm in Wales too. I did think we weren't meant to start see any sort of improvement until two weeks into the lockdown. It'll be interesting to see if that is the case. I do find it's very quiet around and about but it's definitely not the same sort of lockdown as the first.

Hardly anyone follows the rules properly. It so frustrating. Like the north are in tier three but people are still going to each others houses and meeting up. We wouldn't need a lockdown if people just listened

We need to keep any of the economy going that we can , even if that means exemptions for low infection areas . Even just keeping Devon ,Cornwall and East Anglia away from lockdown would help .

Sadly ,as I warned , a month or two ago the young in particular have just stuck two fingers up to the virus and the rules in place to protect the nation from it.

While not all young folks have demonstrated this many have . Again as I warned the youngsters go home to their parents see their grandparents etc and surprise ,surprise the virus spreads exponentially into the more vulnerable groups .

Not Rocket science why this is happening , not a surprise to anyone with an ounce of common sense . Are our younger generation devoid of common sense ? Or do they simply not give a hoot about their parents and grandparents ?
