EU Approves Worms as Edible Food

In the News

This is just gross. When I think the EU can't get any worse, they prove me otherwise.

Not something I would eat but I guess it's no worse than snails something else I would not eat

People eat loads of insects around the world. Prawns are insects of the sea.

I hate sea food. I’ve not tried snails or never will. But I may try some worms. Or other insects. Like crickets. They are high in protein. I would only try them if cooked not raw.

In some countries, snails (cooked) are a snack folks eat at a cafe shop (normally with beer).

I could have tried it myself, but it just doesn't look food humans should eat. If there was nothing else? Maybe.

PhilipMarc I got offered to try a snail when my mates dad was eating them many moons ago. Looked so rubbery and chewy. Eww!

Looking at the picture it says using them in powdered form in food. I have noticed some high protein foods use seafood protein so I guess this isn’t a lot different. I don’t think I could just pick one up and eat it. I find it hard to pick up dried mealworms to feed to the birds.

Correct. This is powdered form and is more normal than people can imagine. They will be probably adding it to flours and to add protein value in processed food.

kikogpe I can see it being very useful in some famine situations as a good way to supplement staples like rice.

Bugs are already used in foods in the UK - shellac for example

I really don't care much about the terrible things they eat in other countries but you'll never get me eating anything remotely insect like.
