Extraction in Kitchen

Ask a Question

So we are looking at extraction in a new kitchen. Building regs say we have to have some kind of my mechanical extraction but as our hob will be on an island and our roof sloped I'm struggling to find something budget friendly and suitable.

I've seen some of the hobs that have extraction fans in them - does anyone have one of these and have any comments on how they are installed, eg if the hob is in the middle of the room is the extraction pipe under the floor?

I hate extraction/hoods. I've never used them and would rather just open a door but building regs say we have to have one 🙄

rararachel Have you asked your builder or the Building Inspector what they can suggest or will accept?

I've had all the info from building regs and it's basically some form of mechanical extraction. Our builder starts shortly so I'll be discussing it then too but I just wondered if anyone had the hob extraction. It seems very popular in a few of the kitchen showrooms we have visited but I don't know if this is just because it's the latest thing.

rararachel Your Architect/Building Surveyor or who ever drew your plans should be able to suggest or advise (my ex did) as to what is on the market/suitable for situation.

It sounds like you're building an entire house from all the topics posted. Have you won the lottery?!

Dennab you're not far off with the building a house. We have finally (after moving 2 years) ago got planning permission for a major extension which also involves pretty much knocking everything out of the house, as well as lots of other expensive stuff like septic tanks, drains, rewire, new roof etc etc.

The builders start in a week, footings first so we are getting a head start with planning lots of stuff.

We haven't won the lottery unfortunately! It can't come quick enough though we have head no heating since September and have been living in one room since then. The beds in the living room and two of us are trying to work from home too. We will shortly be moving out though for 4 months while the majority of the work is done.

rararachel Oh right! I just kept seeing the topics and thought this girl seems to have money to burn. It makes sense now. I wish you luck and hope there are people who can continue helping on here as things progress.

Dennab 😳 I wish! I'm on the lookout for bargains to bring the cost down too.

As long as we have heating and a bath by Xmas I will be pretty damn happy!

Hi rararachel,

I sympathise with you! I went through the same thing last year. We are finally finished and have now started on the garden. I had no kitchen for about six months!

What about a vertical extractor?

gerrykelly25 that's like what we have seen in some showrooms! Do you have it? How do you find it? Is it over an island?

Hi rararachel, I couldn’t get one in the end as I didn’t have enough floor space to make the island large enough to accommodate the fan. They are plumbed under the floor.

You could look at the fans that are flush to the ceiling, they are really unobtrusive but not sure if they are expensive?

Or maybe a fan that looks like a light? - so much choice!!
