Will the Relaunch of 'Fawlty Towers' Live Up to the Original?

Ask a Question

I have mixed emotions about this, I really like Fawlty Towers and it still makes me laugh, but I'm not sure they can recapture the magic.

I personally haven't found any of the relaunches have been as good as the original, Still Open All Hours, The Darling Buds of May come to mind.

But I will watch it, how about you ?

I don't think it will work, I'd like to be wrong but I think as with many things it had its time and is a classic but not something to be revived.

From what I saw on the breakfast show this morning many people feel the same.

Not too hopeful but will definitely give it a watch. There was a kind of innocence in the originals that I fear we've lost these days. Would take a brave man to play basil big shoes to fill

Imnotcheap Ditto, I think the writing is of is time, John Cleaves is playing Basil, I am not sure how the character would work in the modern world, you can't go around hitting staff because they are from Barcelona 😀

beccatavender I've had time to read about it properly now. It looks great, but yes don't know what they'll do about Manuel might have to cut the character out

I will definitely watch it when it comes on, but do agree that they don’t usually work, another one was ‘are you being served’ that didn’t work for me.

Interested to see how it turns out.I like Bradley Walsh in Darling Buds it's different to the original of course but sells on it's own merits.

Should be left in the past.

Great programme, but can't be rehashed.

Absolutely not, Fawlty Towers was a classic and they could never re make something like that.

The only way this works if he can be 100% unwoke. But I have a feeling it will just be to insult older straight White men, something the lefties live for!

I don't think it will be as good as the original. It's a classic which should be left alone.

Fatabelly As John Cleaves is involved in the project, I will watch it, but I haven't got very high expectations.

No I don't think it will work. The original was brilliant, but it was in a time without wokeness, political correctness and the everything upsets the snowflake brigade. Leave the great series as a memory

Remakes are never the same.I remember the remake of Randall and Hopkirk deceased it was so bad and even Kenneth Cope was embarrassed when he saw it he said it was an insult to his late friend. Prunella Scales and John Cleese and Andrew Sachs worked well together.

beccatavender - No, it will not work. Fawlty Towers belongs to "the BBC's golden ages of comedy".

I can't see a new series having a wide appeal for younger audiences and it would likely be considered too woke for people who have fond memories of the original episodes. Maybe, if it's made for Netflix or Amazon Video they might be more willing to deviate from just another safe formulaic rehash.

Can’t make my mind up about this without seeing it. I’ll watch it and decide. I know John Cleese is meticulous about things being just right, so I don’t think he’ll kill it. It may just end up being great. We’ll see.
