Free Bus Travel in London to Protect Drivers

In the News

https://www.standard.co.uk/news/transport/free-bus-travel-london-sadiq-khan-a4417166.html

from Monday, customers “will not be required to touch in” with their payment card or device

Though this may limit contact, surely making buses free just encourages people to travel on them more?

It's only free to protect driver as so many deaths and the filth of the buses plus every one needs a mask on to travel

Even mask would be not enough protection if there is no air ventilation in the bus

They have said use back door only so why not completely section off the drivers area. If it's free then no need to go near driver.

Yes, though it might keep the drivers safe, but the passengers? Let's hope it won't be as bad as we can imagine it to be (we had overcrowded trains previously)

Passengers don't really have any contact with the bus driver as you can only pay by Oyster or a contactless card. It's just being stuck behind the wheel for a shift with germs circulating around the bus. Or the virus could be transmitted from bus driver to bus driver if they are not wiping down the driving area before or after shifts. The old style Routemaster buses would have been safer as the driving cab area was self contained and payment was given to a conductor. I doubt it will encourage more people to travel as there isn't much to do for any potential non-working passengers when they reach their destination.

that's true, as there isn't much point taking the buses to nowhere, although it may convince some people who were using the tube to take the buses instead.

I think with that in mind, this is needed more on buses elsewhere in the country where human contact is more likely during payment.
