French Lawmakers Vote to Ban Short-Haul Domestic Flights
Ask a Question
I read that “ French lawmakers have voted in favour of a bill to ban short-haul internal flights where train alternatives exist, in a bid to reduce carbon emissions”.
Do you think this is a good thing? Can you see this happening in the UK?
BlueEyesX oh, I’m not sure if it’s a good thing. Putting the covid and social distancing issue aside, are trains more eco friendly than planes? Are they trying to force their citizens to use public transport and using the carbon emissions as a reason?
Tbh if it happened in the UK, I’d probably think about driving as I still can’t see myself sitting in a plane or train like a sardine with other commuters, particularly if it is deemed short-haul. I realise driving defeats the purpose re carbon emissions but (covid) safety comes first imho.
It is a good plan in theory provided that the infrastructure is sufficient to provide a reliable alternative. Pricing would also need to be reasonable.
