Fuel, Clothes and Food Prices

In the News

Hello everyone!

I'm attacting this topic under inflation rise recently. As raised in BBC news, have you also stopped using your car for long journeys? What are your ways of reducing high spendings?

I currently drive my son to nursery but he is moving to one much closer to our house so will be walking him each day, which will help save on fuel costs.

I don't buy clothes or shoes unless they are needed. I buy the majority of our sons 2nd hand, in the sales or use vouchers from survey sites. I then sell on anything that is too small for our son and use that to buy his next clothing bundle.

I have stopped buying certain foods altogether as I refuse to pay what they are asking. I get yellow stickers if I can and have cut down our portions. I also use the airfryer more than the oven as it uses a lot less electric.

Well I haven’t had a holiday abroad for over 2 years…that’s certainly saved me a penny or two

hspexy I haven't been abroad in over 10 years and haven't been on holiday in 4 years. We've saved a fortune. We won't be going on holiday anytime soon either

I tend to go for supermarket own branded products. I also try and get as much stuff second hand as possible. Very rare I buy anything full price these days or buy anything branded.

One step at a time start by making a list of stuff your constantly paying for like monthly subscriptions phone contract and try cut out the stuff you dont use regularly and look for cheaper offers on things such as insurance internet bill and takeaway nights

I use clothes I've bought years ago. Still fits and still good.

Don't care much about the brand of it.

Ive cancelled my internet bill and use the wifi at my local library. I cancelled Netflix and a family member gave me their login, so I usually take my ipad that I bought second hand and download stuff onto Netflix at local library. My clothes are second hand and usually only bought when needed. I buy a lot of supermarket own branded products as a lot of times they can be cheaper than £1 shops. If I have to go into my local town centre, I try not buy anything unless it is in a sale or I can use a discount code or get cashback using apps like shopmium and checkoutsmart. I unplug everything when I'm not in or before I go to bed. Stopped spending on takeaway and try and make a meal with whatever food I have in already.

Don't buy anything I don't truly need. We imagine we need all sorts of things when we usually have a storehouse of stuff at home. I have never followed fashion or trends nor do I ever do take outs unless it's a magic bag from Food to go.

MelissaLee1963 I love a good Magic Bag, it a good way to save money plus it also saves food going to waste.

MelissaLee1963 speaking of food, I saw a video where they're going to do a test run for students of a Portuguese University to get used to eat insects, or made of it. 🤢

Larva/maggots as human food. No thanks.

Something tells me that fat guy hasn't gotten that fat eating insects.

Btw, yeah, they have CNN there (while it's predominantly known as a very unreliable news network to the rest).

When it comes to makeup this site is great www.beautyoutlets.co.uk/

They also have physical stores as well, they have a lot of branded makeup at much cheaper prices too. Usually there stuff is the type of makeup that is no longer gunna be sold by the brands and that they have loads of stock left of.

ChelsieLou90 I must let my beauty loving mother in law and best friend know about that website. I haven't worn make up in years, last bought it about 7 years ago so I save a fortune that way but this would be good for them. Thanks for sharing.

MrsCraig you're welcome. I went to physical store a few weeks ago and got some of the Aussie hair mask sachets and they were so cheap. The same product and same size in Boots was double the price.

I think my main ways of stopping high spending is online food shopping, so we dont put more in the trolly than we need. And basically looking for the best deals on anything we do need. We also have the unlimited cinema tickets for cheap date nights.. its£15 a month each to go as often as we like.

I was incensed this morning when watching gmb to hear an expert say that petrol retailers are not passing on the oil price cuts. Prior to the current crisis they made around 7p per litre but now it is about 17p. How are they allowed to get away with this!?
