Google Shopping given record fine - a win for deal hunters
News
Google Shopping, the promoted search results that appear at the top when you look for a product, has been given a record £2.1 billion fine for monopoly practice.
If Google does not appeal and decides to change Google Shopping, this could mean a major win for deal hunters.
At present the search engine gives a price comparison of products, but only amongst paid advertisers.
If you're searching for the cheapest product you wouldn't necessarily find it. Instead, he-who-pays-wins. You may have noticed yourself that ebay, very and Argos all featured heavily but you'd never see Amazon.
Google's own info-button says, "Google may be compensated by some of these providers." but when I researched by clicking every result you could see each one went through a re-direct ad tracker meaning it was being paid.
Hopefully this means we may start seeing more unpaid price comparison results within Google Shopping, which is a win for deal hunters
