Grease is Latest Movie to Be Complained About

In the News

I loved this film growing up but looks like it not a popular film with today’s generation.

The hit 70's musical Grease has become the latest target of ‘woke’ critics

Outraged viewers hit out on Twitter after the movie was screened on BBC1

Youngsters took to social media to label it ‘rapey’, 'overly white' and misogynist

Those who called it misogynist were probably females who, as all we blokes know, aren't capable of thinking properly.

(before WWlll starts... I'm only joking)😀

They will likely regard most Hollywood films made in the 20th century the same way. Grease is a 70s film set in the 50s. What do they expect. Wait until they see Porky's, Animal House or Revenge of the Nerds. Then they really are going to freak out.

All those things are very valid criticisms, though. You can enjoy movies and accept the flaws in it too. It’s so reductionist to call it an affliction of the ‘woke’ youngsters only.

Twitter and BBC. lmao

That's a recipe for disaster.

People can keep trying but you cannot change history. Do we really want young people to have every example of 'how it used to be' wiped from memory and media? Most have an appalling grasp of history anyway so this is going to confuse them even more. Bridgerton is a really good example of this, although having said that, I enjoyed it immensely.

The worlds gone mad, history is history, the past, the past. They stand as a reminder of when things were done well or when things were done not so well, so one can learn and improve. Medical science is a prime example.

Sorry but I have to say more on this subject! I am a bit of a purist when it comes to depicting history on films, books etc and my family are driven mad when I constantly say 'that wouldn't have happened back then, they wouldn't have said/done that' and so forth. So this can work the opposite way when the lack of morals and decorum we exhibit today are often depicted in films set hundred(s) of years ago. A good example is when a gentleman and lady share an embrace or even a kiss in public.......it just wouldn't have happened. And don't get me started on the speech!

Lynibis my husband and I do that too! We will be watching a film or TV programme and one of us will say that isn't historically correct or they didn't have that back then! I haven't watched Bridgerton yet. My Granny has and when I asked her what she thought she said "there is a rather dashing young man in it, he is very handsome". No mention of the plot, costumes etc just that the lead actor was attractive!

MrsCraig I agree with your granny, he is very attractive and made a very good leading man. Quite the hero!

I found the underlying plot line a bit unbelievable and will be interested to know if you agree if/when you watch it.

Lynibis I going to start watching it later this week. My son monopolises the TV with his cartoons so need to wait till he is having his nap to watch it.

You can appreciate it for the classic from it's time while also recognising the issues with it. Pretending there wasn't problems back in the day is just burying your head in the sand. Acknowledging the past for what it was is how we progress as a society

Ann1984 Deadly serious! I love grease, it's a cracking film, but I can enjoy it while still recognising there's plenty of things in it that I'm glad aren't acceptable anymore. There's no such thing as "complaining" about our history, you can either pretend it didn't happen (which is stupid), pretend it was perfect (which is also stupid), or see if for what it was at the time, and recognize where we've come since then.

Ann1984 I must admit, watched a bit of Grease with son and his family over Christmas and we were laughing guiltily at the words and content, but we were all mature enough to accept that was how it was.

The only alternative is to archive everything that offends but no matter how hard the sensitive brigade try, they cannot wipe out the unpleasant parts of history, and let's face it, most of it was unpleasant.

I really do agree with the term “snowflakes“ - absolutely nothing is acceptable these days, someone is offended by everything and anything. As others have said, you can’t rewrite history because you’re offended by it - why not just be grateful they don’t live in the 70s (seeing as they would’ve been so offended by it) and move on 🙄

Grease will always be a top film for me, i love to sing along. Although some criticisms may be true, the same can be said for many popular films these days too.

I must admit I watched Grease for the first time in YEARS and I noticed a lot of rude bits I had never noticed watching it as a kid. 🤣 Hilarious! Still love it and John Travolta is gorgeous!!

Years ago I would go and watch a film when Barry Norman would say it was rubbish . 9/10 I would love the film . Now I go by the mark of the "Wokes" and if it comes with complaints are forthcoming and then I will watch the films .
