Guy Fawkes

We have all been chatting about Halloween but does anyone do much on the 5th November? I guess if I was still a young mum I would take my kids to an organised display but I think doing your own fireworks is a bit risky.

And does anyone remember doing 'penny for the guy' when young? I know People say it is begging but as kids we certainly didn't see it that way lol!

We used to do the penny for the guy and any money was put back into the local community and we always went to fireworks displays.

I haven't been to a fireworks display in years. Was meant to go to one during my first year at university as it was just down the road but my granny died that morning and I couldn't face it. I told my friends to go without me. My best friend stayed with me despite my protests and we watched it from the bedroom window with a toffee apple.

I would like to take my son to a fireworks display when he is older, they do one in our local park, which is only a 10 minute walk away.

I must admit I have no interest in standing around in the cold any more. Seen one display, seen them all! Quite glad to have the excuse to snuggle indoors watching something good on the box lol.

Lynibis I don't particularly have an interest in it either but I would like to give my son the experience of it at least once, when he is old enough to understand and appreciate it.

We had a lovely time on bonfire night when I was young - and also when my kids were little ones . Mostly we had a bonfire in the garden with the traditional jacket spuds baked beans and sausages . The atmosphere was great . But the fire works were usually rubbish that promised the stars but in reality gave a little “fift,’ before dying out . Catherine wheels stopped half round and either jumped off the nail or just shot a sparkly tail in one direction.

Sparklers were fun amazement ! You could. Write your name in the air with them! But watch out - those hot sticks could burn , so we had buckets of water stategucally placed to throw them in when they’d stopped sparkling . We did go to organised shows in more recent years . They are usually amazingly colourful and beautiful to watch but they don’t have the home comforts of popping indoors in the warm , and you also have to get to the venue .

but this all adds to the excitement and expectation of the event . It’s also a nice community feel if you attending a local display .

something I have always noticed is that the day after fireworks the weather foggy . Is it the bonfire smoke lingering on in the atmosphere?

As a child I did do penny for the guy . it was a tradition back then . There was competition to see whose guy was best . great fun .

sorting a pair of dads old trousers and a shirt or jacket over a stuffed pillowcase to make his body and sitting him in a pushchair for manageability.

nowdays I worry about my pets and stay at home usually to make sure they are in . although I’ve been invited to a display on Saturday so will probably go with my daughter and her boys .

We always made it a real family affair with a mini fire pit, hot dogs, BBQ chicken and hot chocolate. I wish the organised firework displays still happened as these were safe and had a great atmosphere.

These days it is a case of the mind is willing but the body is weak lol. I do enjoy playing the hostess but as I do 6 and 5 day weeks alternately I just don't have time. 6 days a month for shopping, housework, family visits etc and I do get really tired. I have also done a fair bit of decorating this last couple of weekends. But to be honest I can take or leave fireworks and will save my energy for putting on an early Christmas for sons and grandkids on 15th December.
