Home Cooking and Lockdown
Ask a Question
Has anyone’s cooking skills improved during to lockdown?
I had high hopes I’d extend my limited range of meals. I even bought a few more cook books. Tried a few adventurous dishes (for my family anyway) but we still return to the old faithful dishes.
Has anyone discovered their hidden, inner Jamie Oliver or Heston Blumenthal during lockdown?
If anything I've gone the other way, I'm a qualified Chef and have had much of the last year off work.
I've reverted to easy, quick food where possible.
We started writing down list of weeks meals then getting ingredients online make sure we got them all which does mean we being bit more adventurous
Got few new favourites now. Will definitely be sticking to this easier at mealtimes when its decided in advance
I like to work on the Ready Steady Cook principle and find meals to make from what I could get as a freebie or yellow label, or what is in the fridge or freezer. I currently have 3 cucumbers and the asda 20p veg if anyone has ideas!
You can't beat yellow stickers I make a cucumber sauce when having salmon or have a look here https://www.tablespoon.com/meals/things-to-do-with-a-cucumber
Grannyclock Put in a saucepan 1 tabspn mayo, 1 tabspn salad cream, 3 tabspn double cream, about 4 inch cucumber chopped into cubes, black pepper, 1 teaspn lemon juice. Gently heat to serve with hot salmon or make loads and have cold with left overs
lilyflower ooh, Thankyou for that. I would make lots of cucumber salad but it’s a bit chilly for that.
I have started making big bowls of different salads which compliment each other, last a few days and go with lots of different fish & meats. Great for lunches and bbqs
I recently found a gorgeous raw cauliflower and apple one that honestly I would have questioned, but it is now a firm favourite here!
GmcK85 salads are definitely better when you have a variety of ingredients in them.
Overnight oats are also a really easy way to jazz up breakfast. So many favours and variations to add. We also made sure to have bag of frozen berries in the freezer, along with seeds and nuts. That way you are never stuck and can't go wrong!
GmcK85 I’m one of those old fashioned people who like to stick to plain porridge!
Grannyclock I used to be, but now love trying different things, although some days plain porridge is hard to beat!
I have started batch cooking! Since the first lock down I cook up different foods and freeze them. So much easier at dinner times now.
