Hong Kong Could End up Throwing Away Unused Pfizer Vaccines

In the News

Hong Kong currently has around two million Pfizer shots that will be out of date in three months.

There has been a low uptake of the vaccine ( less than 20% ) despite there being enough for the total population. These two million vaccines can not be used once out of date.

What a waste if this should happen. Many countries are crying out for the vaccine. Hope someone sees the light and distributes them to a country where they will be used.

What do you think of this?

People don't seem to realise the long term damage that Covid itself can cause. It attacks every organ of the body and we still don't understand the full effects. Pfizer is harder to store than the Oxford jab. It has to be stored at very low temperatures where as the Oxford jab can be stored at normal fridge temperatures. Also the pfizer jab costs a lot more 2 million jabs is a serious amount of investment. 2 million oxford jabs is about £4-5 million but I think 2 million Pfizer jabs would be more like £50 million. Pfizer is a full commercial product. However even that £50 million is a small price to pay compared to the costs of hospital treatment for 10s of thousands of people. Hong Kong people are lucky their government has obtained the vaccines for them.

BonzoBanana I agree that the citizens of Hong Kong are lucky that their government obtained vaccines for the population. I find it astonishing that the uptake was so low which is blamed on a relatively low number of infections and distrust (understandably) of the government.

This virus will continue to infect and kill for a long time to come.

My main gripe is the fact that potentially 2 million vaccines will be thrown away.

BlueEyesX what a waste. You think they could they could use some joined-up thinking and give to a neighbouring nation that needs it.

HappyTravels I mean even mainland China would benefit. I think China's own vaccine's are quite basic with low efficacy. The oxford jab is far more successful in protecting against new strains and more severe damage to the body. It actually protects against blood clots in the lungs, stomach and heart more than the pfizer jab but is slightly less protection against blood clots in the brain compared to pfizer but both vaccines over far greater protection against blood clots anywhere in the body compared to having covid unvaccinated.

charlottegardie I know, it’s almost criminal. No joined-up thinking going on here.

That’s silly. If they don’t want them, then send them to over countries to help out. Hopefully they will.

Hong Kong should offer them to other nations if they’ve been stored correctly. India for one desperately need the vacines.

How about offer/donate the vaccines to 3rd world countries instead of wasting vaccines.
