Keeping British Summer Time Clock

In the News

There is talk that we may be keeping the clock at British summer time. No longer having to put the clocks back one hour in October.

This means that instead of it getting dark at about 4 pm it will then be dark about 5 pm.

Of course this will mean that it won’t get daylight until about 8:30 am

What is people view on this. I personally think it will be great for Morale.

I agree with you jilly as I hate the dark nights. Also I hate changing the time on clocks and appliances as it takes ages. The sooner this starts the better.

Sugarbabe thanks for your comment. I am definitely happy to swap a darker morning for a lighter evening. Hopefully it decreases said syndrome for a lot of people

I am in favour of a longer evening, they always talk about it but it has not happened yet. Fingers crossed.

There was a time when I had to get up at 4am in winter 3 times a week and it was awful, groping for the light switch, putting kitchen light on to make tea, freezing cold as the heating was not required that early on other days. So, whether it is 4am or 7am it would feel the same and I hate getting up in the dark. But, likewise I hate dark early evenings and whatever we do will not please everyone. It would be especially hard on farmers if it didn't get light until 8.30am.

Lynibis The farmer is round my way work in the night time I think things have changed these days and it’s dark in the mornings for me anyway with the current clocks going back

I don't mind the dark evenings. I'm very rarely out when it's dark. I would much rather keep it as it is. I don't like the idea of walking my son to school in the dark in the morning.

MrsCraig That is a fair comment I can understand your concerns

I think it would be a good idea, I always find the clocks changing hardwork as it throws the kids out of their bedtime routine for a couple of days, although it was worse when they were babies.

If given a choice, I'd personally prefer to scrap BST and stick to GMT. Whilst an hour shorter during the evenings, daylight hours would still be relatively long during the summer. Whilst I personally don't mind dark evenings, I am not much of a fan of dark mornings as it makes it more difficult for me to get out of bed. I also don't like the idea of children going to school when it is still dark.

I would welcome this but they’ve been talking about it for years. Fingers crossed it happens soon.

Feels like using the wrong time zone, then.

Spain knows a lot about that.

I think we should stop changing clocks definitely but stick with GMT

Imnotcheap I was going to say exactly the same, it won't take long for people to work out what time to assign the number of the hour to the tasks (work, school, milking the cows etc.) I see no purpose (other than to confuse) the need for time not to be GMT. AT ALL TIMES!

I was born at 12.20am during WWll (when there was double light time saving) so actually wonder if my birthday should be the previous day when it would have been 10.20pm, GMT

I'd have got my bus pass a day earlier too 😀 (so it is important)😀

Imnotcheap No thanks one is enough😀 It could cause confusion too... whether I should use my "official birthday" (the one on my birth certificate) or the date it actually was.😀

davidstockport as not as you are twice as old.

Its always annoying when clocks change you get used to one then all changes

Imnotcheap What's even more annoying is that the extra hour we're supposed to get when the clocks go back is that that extra hour is used up altering all the bloody clocks.😀

True story: Back in the days when we had teletext I got a phone call from a friend who'd spent hours trying to find out how to adjust the time on his TV.

It’s the getting up and going to work plus then coming home in the dark that gets me ! feels like all my daylight hours are spent in work !!

I’m not a good at getting up morning person but would still prefer to awake in the dark and have a little longer bit of an evening after arriving home the light lifts my mood and encourages me to be more active

It’s been on the table for discussion for years but never seems to materialise

it would make life easier on two days a year! I would prefer not to bother with clock changes but can understand it will impact some people more than it will me. I always thought Scotland were more against it than England as it would affect them a lot more.

I don't think this will ever happen. It has always been talked about by various experts for years. I suspect these experts are collecting funds for even discussing it.

It's pointless to change it but I'm pretty sure there are some compelling reason to change the times.

stuartsmith544 "Compelling Reasons" I can't think of any reason at all nor can anyone who can see that we just need to change the time we do things at.

It seems ridiculous that we have two different times at the same times:

I'm posting this at 2.30pm GMT and 3.30pm BST. (see what I mean?) 😀

davidstockport Very well put . Even as a child I never understood especially in winter when like at half 3 I would see the street lights coming on. Should just keep it as no forwards or backwards.
