Cats love trees, they love things that hang and dangle, and they love shiny objects. With this said it’s not difficult to understand how your beautifully decorated Christmas Tree will seem like a wonderful playground to your furry friend. But a toppled tree will not only make a lot of mess, it can also hurt your cat, so it’s best to do everything you can to keep your curious cat away from your holiday evergreen. Lol. Yep. We have 2 large 6 month old kittens who are absolutely loving the tree despite our best efforts to stop them. They both love to lie under or next to the tree biting the branches, they don't give a damn about the needles. Before we realised they had a whale of a time taking baubles off the tree and hiding them round the entire house. So now shut out of that room in night but the thing that has really worried us is the lights, first day a set stopped working. Couldn't be certain it was the cats but seemed odd. Yesterday my husband was in the lounge when the lights all went off on the tree, he looked at it and out walked Buddy carrying a light bulb in his mouth that he had proudly removed while it was still live. So now we do not put the lights on. Lucky they are so adorable but think we may give the tree a miss next year 
Live light bulbs eh, that's quite daring isn't it. Doesn't Buddy know that he isn't a qualified electrician! 
tumblespots clearly not. Honestly, we can laugh because he was OK but it doesn't bear thinking about. Think it's more that he's a big, gentle, dopey giant rather than daring. We bought him with his sister as 2 girls, took them to the vets for vaccinating and the vet said 'umm, she's a boy' lol. Trouble from the word go

Yes, that could keep the cats away from the tree and decorations.
It could be fun if you have both and the dog chases the cat around/through the tree!
Over the years I have had upto 5 cats at one time 
my first cat 21 years ago now just used to lay under the tree and didn't really cause that much damage, but the rest have caused havoc 
my daughter always had a tree in her room which once the cats got in the baubles were all over her room by the time she got home from school 
the main Christmas tree was held up by string as the 3 year old cat would catapult himself into the tree, I use to have a little village and people under the tree but the cats kept carrying the people around, but it's all good fun, but I always shut them out the room at night 
It does sound as though Christmas has been an 'exiting' time with your cats around to help with the decorations. I'm not sure that I have heard of one catapulting itself into the tree before but then again perhaps other cat owners will tell me that this is not as uncommon as I think?! Happy Christmas JaneWest
The settee was near to the tree so the cat could catapult into it from the arm of the settee lol

I don't have a cat, we have a dog and she does pretty much the same thing. I have a friend who used to put her tree in her babies old playpen so the cats couldn't get at it.
the method I find works best is shouting 'Get out of that tree!' and rush towards it. Repeat that all day and evening long until you give up. Kitties do what they want. I abandoned christmas lights due to fear of electrocution. we don't want a cooked kitty. 
I don't think that any kitty cares that they have never been to 'electrical school' and will do what they want anyway.
If you've got electric fairy lights, baring a few cables on the lower branches will usually stop cats trying to climb into the tree (a second time). It will also prevent dogs thinking the tree is an inside toilet.
Dry rubber gloves should be used if adding or removing any ornaments or gifts from the tree, and in case of fire DO NOT use water unless you've disconnected the lights from the mains, although if the main electrical fuse has blown (everything else that's electric stops working) then it's OK to use water until the fire brigade arrives.
