Just popped up on Netflix and as it's right up my street had to watch immediately!
A rework of Henry V and the battle of Agincourt. Not as stuffy as the Shakespearean version but true to life and gritty whilst retaining a believable view of life back then.
Would highly recommend if you like historical films that are not glossy and too Hollywood.
There is a new film out on prime about Robert the Bruce. Not watched it yet (we have lost the other remote. Probably under the sofa but we are both being stubborn and refusing to look! Reckon my husband will cave this afternoon and find it) but it is meant to be very good.
At first I thought you meant the Chris Pine film, Outlaw King. But I see there is the new one you mention so will go for that next. I have read a trilogy of books about Robert and history has made him quite the hero.
Lynibis I've seen outlaw king which was good but there is another one. I studied Robert and William Wallace at university. They are both very misunderstood characters at times. I hate the film braveheart as it does not portray either of them well and is not historically accurate. Yet people think that is what they were like.
MrsCraig I watched Braveheart when it first came out but could never watch again as I find the brutality hard to watch. Not in the way of mental issues, as in my other post, but I just can't stand watching such cruelty. With history I can consign it to the past but I cannot watch current films that show the brutality that still goes on in today's modern world.
I don't think film makers will ever get historical films totally accurate, Falstaff in The King was a fictional character from the mind of Shakespeare, but I think these films are a good way for less academic folk to learn some of the bare bones of history.
Lynibis there was a very good programme on the BBC about Robert the Bruce, it was part of the clans series and it was very detailed and we watched it just before Outlaw king and I was also impressed with how accurate it was and how much they packed into such a short time.
I love discussing history, my husband and I do it often, as we both studied it at uni. Lots of history and RMPS discussions in our house!
Well, if you haven't already, try Versailles, Outlander, Black Sails, Vikings, The Last Kingdom and The Tudors which is quite old now but good.
My boss loved it too, our tastes are very much the same, maybe cos we're both Librans!
