Kitchen Nightmares
Ask a Question
Am I the only one who gets irritated/flustered cooking whilst others are in the kitchen.. I don't know why .. but I can never quite fully relax (maybe it's my anxiety) I feel panicked on the inside and generally overwhelmed with people moving around me. I'd be terrible working in a fast paced restaurant
My husband is the same as you hates anyone in the kitchen when he does cook thankfully hardly ever . As I was a chef for over 20 years from the age of 16 I don’t mind the company as get lonely in the kitchen
My Mother was the same, which is why I didn't know how to cook when I left home .
Not sure what your circumstances are if it's family or a shared house. Why not suggest you take it in turns to cook or find a time when the kitchen is less busy, to do your prep, put something in a slow cooker when the kitchen is less busy.
One pot cooking is also a good to reduce stress and washing up.
beccatavender I love the idea of one pot cooking thankyou for your useful tips
I think it is some primal instinct to stop predators stealing our food, even usually placid dogs will object to any interference when they're eating or if anyone goes near their food. I notice chefs who are usually quite nice people seem to switch from Jekyll to Hyde mode in the kitchen.
Not really a fan of being watched whilst I'm cooking. And dishing up/presentation is an added pressure. My mum is the exact same! Whilst the other is cooking, one of us go in the next room until it's done. Lmao
Ditto! I notice when food is cooking,
people seem to accumulate to the kitchen! "Be about 10 minutes" - 1 minute later they're back again Nadiaparveen
I generally prefer to be left alone when I'm in the kitchen, even if it's just something simple like making a sandwich. I think I look at it as "me time", where I'm taking a break from other stuff to cook/prepare food to eat, so I like to just get on with it and be left alone.
Kitchen Nightmares ! Cleaning out the cupboards and finding , at the back of them , gadgets bought , used once and consigned to the back of the cupboard . Yoghurt maker , Pannini press , juicer , Breadmaker, Deep fat fryer are just some that are taking up space .
Not saying they aren't useful to some but you can do all the things they can with an oven, kitchen tools and an ounce of common sense .
I don't mind others being in the kitchen whilst I cook. I've got a 2 year old so if he wasn't in the kitchen with me I would never get any cooking done! My husband and I often cook together. I would having other people in the kitchen, either to help out or just to talk too!
As I only use a microwave to cook and it's in my hallway , my kitchen never has an over crowded aspect to it ..
My husband doesn’t cook at all. He is of that generation where men didn’t, however he told me before we married that he had cooked proper meals for himself after his divorce! I love him to help with bits while I’m cooking but he is obsessed with washing up and keeps washing up all the things I’ve got out to use!
My dad's obsessed with washing up too. My mum's barely put a utensil down when cooking it's already being washed. Drives her nuts. He does cook though (and washes up as he cooks, obviously )
I loathe people hovering over me when I cook though I'm in a busy house so it's pretty much inevitable. I find things like fryups the worse when I've got frying pans going, saucepans, stuff in the oven, toast in the toaster, coffee maker on - and hubby and kids underfoot. I've been known to tell them to either lend a hand or get out...
