Who Knew Chocolate Biscuits Could Be so Controversial
In the News
A Bahlsen - Choco Leibniz biscuits - heiress, Verena Bahlsen has said the company "did nothing wrong" by using forced labourers during WWII. This came out in an interview while she was trying to defend a previous comment, when she said 'I'm a capitalist. I own a quarter of Bahlsen, that's great. I want to buy a sailing yacht and stuff like that.' Which was seen as insensitive given the company's history - https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-48286383
Which is a shame as I like Choco Leibniz biscuits, but can't see myself buying them again. A false apology, no doubt written by a PR team trying limit the damage caused by her remarks, isn't going to be enough. This is just another example of the arrogance and ignorance of some people with great wealth. It reminded me of the Nut Rage Incident in 2014
This is so wrong....just not buying those biscuits anymore....will get dark chocolate digestives instead, also cheaper and taste great.
It seems the human psyche becomes more dispassionate, rude, arrogant and oftimes ruthless, in direct relation to power and wealth achieved. How often do we see this in celebrities treating their staff as minions, only existing for their convenience.
Before fame you have to watch your baser instincts to some extent, but as you climb the ladder it seems easier to trample those below you on that same ladder.
I prefer to live by the old adage: be careful how you treat those you climb over on your way up as you are very sure to meet them on the way down.
I agree, I also think it's usually worse for people born into money, as they are more likely to take everything and everyone for granted. They often come across as devoid of empathy.
Those people who forced worked for her should get compensation....not an answer that she wants to buy herself a yacht....most of us can live without.
They are probably all dead now as it was during ww2. It ended nearly 75 years ago so only very young people then would still be alive today.
Lynibis Some of those people still alive who were young in the II. W.W. Those people maybe had kids.....and they were forced to work so those families still should receive something....Honestly the owner does not deserve the yacht...to say something like this. It is just morally bad.
AgnesFaludi I agree, as you can see from my comment above. That people can even have those sort of thoughts is beyond my comprehension.
