What Did You Learn by Rote Growing Up?
Ask a Question
I went to a wedding today and as part of the service, they said the Lords Prayer, it must be over 20 years, since I have said this prayer as I am not a Church goer. But it came back to me straight away, when I went to school we said this every day.
Can you think of anything you learnt by rote, I can think of the times table .
The Green Cross Code. Look Right. Look Left. Look right again and if there's nothing coming..cross the road!
Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally.
Designed to help pupils remember the order of operations when solving math problems
It stands for Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, and Subtraction.
Xenophon Whilst it helped me to remember North, East, South & West, it never helped me to know where North was
I understand they no longer recite times tables which is a shame as once learned it did tend to stay with you for life.
I feel certain that stuff drummed into you at junior school stays put much better than secondary as you are then distracted by the rebellious kids, social media and the opposite sex. I can still remember my lines from the merchant of venice school play when I played Basanio!
Xenophon too true...I can't repeat here what my 14 year old grandson has been told to write about, suffice to say when he wrote a well thought out piece without any rudeness or inflammatory content he was told he couldn't say that. So now not even allowed to have free thought or expression!
We watched a stand-up comedian on the TV the other day and he had the audience singing hymns from school. They all seemed to remember the words and so could I, even though I hadn't heard the songs for years. It's amazing how it sticks with you.
Midnightflower I am constantly amazed at how easily 5 year olds I work with can sing all the words of a pop song but cannot retain a simple educational fact I might tell them. I suppose it proves that repetition is a good learning tool.
I learnt to play the recorder during my final year at primary school. Years later when my son brought one home I could still remember how to play some tunes on it.
