Liked Richard Madden in Bodyguard.....Well You Will Love This!

Other

Bodyguard certainly went down a storm and seemed to have a lot of press attention, especially Richard Madden who most people had known from Game of Thrones (Rob Stark).

Well, he is also in a fantastic series on Netflix called Medici. It is not new and I watched it a few years ago. Was pleased to see series two is now airing with Sean Bean so am watching series 1 again and thoroughly enjoying it before I start series 2.

You can certainly see why the mafiosa flourished in Italy when you watch this family feud saga set back in the times when Italy was divided and even the Pope wasn't safe. I recommend it highly and if you like it, try The Borgias next.

I loved the Medici on Netflix - I have now finished watching the second series. Lorenzo played by Daniel Sharman (Kol in The Originals) was a very good choice. He became very believable as the series progressed and I thoroughly enjoyed it. OK Richard Madden is a little tough to follow but the saga is very watchable. If you loved Sharpe and his character..............no my lips are sealed. Great news as there is talk of a third series.

That is brilliant, glad someone else enjoys that sort of stuff, will really look forward to series 2 and thrilled to hear may be a third. If I am absolutely honest I have to say Richard Madden is not the greatest actor but he has been lucky to get some plum parts to propel him to fame. Still, he is easy on the eye.

Although it is my second watch of series 1 couldn't help getting a little tearful last night when Lorenzo was killed.

Lynibis I have to agree with you on the fortuitous roles RM has been given but I also admit I find him a lot more attractive when he's sporting facial hair. 🤣 I could ramble about the new series but have no intention of spoiling it for you. Enjoy.

angemski Just done first two episodes, finding it hard to get used to all new characters. Pietro (Cossimo's son) was just a kid (though married) in the first series that ended with Lucrezia expecting, but he is suddenly a very old man with his son still in 20s. Hate that Sean Bean is the baddy once again and they really cast well for the Pazzi's as they all look evil! I guess that's where the saying about being a Patsy came from in Italy.

Lynibis I couldn't get familiar with the characters......to the point that I googled the family tree to make it clearer. 😂 It was good to see Contissina make an appearance (Cosimo's wife) but it does take a while to feel involved. Stick with it because the characters do grow. Yeah! Those Pazzis! I was always a little bit in lust with Richard Sharpe but that ship sailed. Update me on your views when you've watched some more.

angemski i have just watched 6 episodes straight! It took a while to get used to all the new characters and I found myself wishing we could have started with the rest of Cosimo's story before going forward, even just a little to ease us in. That said, I found it totally gripping (even though Sean Bean oft times looked as if he had stepped out of Scrooge and in to the wrong film set).

As you may have seen in mmokane24 thread about favourite monarchs I am passionate about history........I now want to study this period of Italian history and see how much was fact and how much filled in by an excellent script writer. I knew some of it and this series is very reminiscent of The Borgias, another great series if you haven't yet seen it. Even the plot has similarities and the Machiavellian mind games. Jeremy Irons stars as a very naughty Pope.

I noticed Richard Madden was an executive Producer on this so nice that he was still involved. I hope one day to see him in a role where he actually smiles rather than the scowls and dark looks.

Oh well, back to my second viewing of The Last Kingdom now and then maybe another go at Vikings. Will probably still be ages away from next series of Outlander and if you haven't seen that, more about it on another thread if you search Outlander.

Must get some sleep now if I can get the image of those gruesome hangings out of my head!!! 😬

PS yes, I used to love Sharpe too but as I have aged as much as him I can't complain lol.

Oh my goodness! ........are we related? 😂 We have very similar tastes and opinions on authors and programmes. My favourite being Bernard Cornwell - I've read almost everything he's written. I've watched the Borgias and strung out the last episodes of The Last Kingdom, Vikings and Outlander. (it is such a long time to wait between series so I save one of each a little longer before watching) I've also read Outlander alongside the series and, up to a point, it was pretty faithful. Unfortunately I read a little too far along and this last series varied enormously with characters not doing what they are supposed to or incidents not being included. I suppose there has to be a final 'cut. I'm glad you enjoyed the Medici and felt the same about poor old Shawn Bawn! The only character/actor I couldn't quite believe was King Arthur AKA Giulliano - he didn't have the smoulder. I'm off to look up the threads you've mentioned. I've really enjoyed this post - thank you.

Me too! and thanks for reminding me where I had seen Giulliano before, it was bugging me throughout!

btw if you like Bernard Cornwell you will probably like a series of books by David Gilman, also mentioned in a book thread on here. The series is called Masters of War, but each book is individually titled too.
