How Long Can I Store Tinned Goods Before They Expire?
Ask a Question
I was reading another article about a food show and how presenter Kate Quilton is seen retching after eating a can of 50-year-old kangaroo tail soup on her programme Food Unwrapped, despite her dislike of the contents it was perfectly edible
So i did a search and found an article about tinned goods and how long they will keep
It is possible to keep some none acidic tinned foods indefinitely if stored correctly eg tins of beans , providing they are not dented or rusty , the expiration date is more a reference to the food retaining its' taste and nutritional value
This is good to know when we are all trying to save money on expensive ever increasing food items , so don't always ditch your canned goods just because of the date , at least for a good few years anyway

I always go by taste, look and smell.Certainly not bothered by something BBE unless it's prawns or chicken .Do stale but not salmonella lol.
MelissaLee1 The freezer is a saviour M with about to expire foods, but not still in the can though
telmel A friend blamed his upset tummy on a tin of peas the other day. I've never heard the like. I think he just has an irascible nature and is a candidate for IBS. Maybe if tins have dents and air holes eh. Most of em are packed out with preservatives anyway.
MelissaLee1 I would just check for any pinholes or dents M as you say , maybe immerse the tin in some water to double check, if the can has been in the kitchen cupboard a while it wont do any harm to give it a clean anyway
There was one time my aunt did a clear out and found some tinned meatballs with an expiration date of 1989…as it was over a decade old, she didn’t want to chance it!
telmel - No, no, no. Do not "Save The Planet" by storing and eating canned food past its best before date. All the major supermarket has sufficient supplies of canned food.
jam45 That's true J , but some people haven't got the funds to buy them, if people can use the food they already have in the cupboard without worrying too much about it being past the expiry date then we will all save money, and there will be less waste and hunger
I doubt the supermarkets care, the more people throw away the more they need to buy and the more profit they make , and they are not exactly champions of waste control anyway
