Man Crushed to Death under Car While Stealing Part
In the News
It's sad for his family, the jack he was using collapsed.
How much does a £ stolen catalytic converter bring, to risk this
I'm not exactly sure how much stolen catalytic converters fetch, but do know it's only a fraction of the cost of replacing one.
I extend my sympathies to all those who've been victims of catalytic converter theft.
I've since read, elsewhere, he knew where it was going and was expecting to get £500 for it. His expectations were crushed too.
I know catalytic converters are an easy target to thieves and stealing them is on the increase. Let’s hope this case will deter others.
Its very sad that he died, but if he wasn't taking something that didn't belong to him, we wouldn't be having this chat.
You wonder how many times previously he had done this, how many people woke up to find their car unusable and faced with a huge bill to repair. I'm sure many simply couldn't afford the repair and either had to borrow or wait before their car could be repaired. It's a common technique in court to make a defence where personal circumstances were really terrible at that time and so the crime was a one off to reduce sentencing but often these are repeat offenders. I realise here the offender died but still I question if this is the first time this person has done this.
Also its a BMW which are known to have some of the most expensive repairs, its a German premium luxury brand. I could see such a repair costing many thousands if the a stolen part alone can fetch around £500.
BMW come 31 out of 40 brands for reliability.

but that isn't the whole story often repairs can cost many times the amount for other brands so its not just the frequency of repairs but the cost per repair too. A car that is 3x as likely to go wrong with 3x the average repair cost is close to 10x as expensive to own before you go into all the extra vehicle excise duty, servicing and insurance costs.
You see many BMW's in quite low income housing areas its not necessarily a car for those on high incomes. Often bought second-hand by people who want to be seen with a more premium car who may not fully understand the costs before purchase. Such cars may be more accessible to steal catalytic converters rather than on middle class estates with better crime prevention.
Just seen that Humberside Police have issued a warning about Catalytic converter theft in the area
I was always of the opinion when you saw on the TV someone had took "there 1st ecstasy tablet" and it had killed them. I was if you play Russian roulette with your life then you get what you deserve.
If this person was stealing it sends the same message of the price they have paid.
I have a bit of sympathy but not much. I would make the point though that if he was prepared to steal from others he had no sympathy or empathy for others as he was a disgusting self-centred individual, a vile person.
As a country we are likely to get much poorer in the future as we deal with our huge debts built up as part of being in the EU plus the cost of the pandemic. Factor in more extreme weather and more costs for that too and the fact we will try to reduce the effect our lifestyles have on the environment which means we will likely end up much poorer in real terms. People don't like getting poorer, we may see many issues caused by this including a much higher crime rate.
I don't say it with any pleasure but punishments for crimes will have to increase and be a greater deterrent.
