Meals That Children Eat
Ask a Question
I’ve started a new job about 2 weeks ago I need to revamp a menu, Im struggling with what decent meals children would eat. My daughter is as hard to feed as they come so i need some inspiratio.... go go go
Any kind of rice or pasta dish works well for my son and I blend up various vegetables to make sauces. He also loves cous cous which I add finely chopped veg to
My son loves spaghetti bolognese, I had sweet potato and carrots to the sauce for extra veggies and some onion and garlic too and then blend it. He also love chicken and broccoli pasta bake. Curry is also a hit, tikka masala with extra veggies in the sauce. You could have a look at annabel Karmel for inspiration, she makes loads of fab recipes for children and you could probably adapt them to suit the age range you need it for.
My advice may not be very helpful (your child may be too young or you don't have the time) but for what it is worth: I have my grandson one day a week during every school holiday and feeding him was a nightmare. I gave him all the lectures about your body needing good food just like putting the right fuel in a car or it won't work etc. I told him, in non frightening ways, that sugar etc is not good for you. but he continued to pick or say no to all my food choices (same at home).
I then began to do cookery lessons with him on our days together. We started off with lasagne and I got him to do every safe part of the process, including making our own cheese sauce. He took it home that evening and my son phoned next day to say they had ALL enjoyed it for dinner.
Next time I made meatloaf with him and got him to get his hands in the bowl mixing all the ingredients, patting it down in the loaf tin etc and the end result was the same. In fact I took one round on Sunday for their freezer but son texted later to say grandson had insisted on having it for dinner that night!
When children make their own food they can see what goes in, they take pride in the finished dish and are excited at parents trying it and praising their efforts. He now eats far more different foods than he did before.
I have also sat at the table with him and listed lots of things that are used to enhance food that, although he may not like them on their own, they add to the overall flavour without being tasted. (Worcester sauce, mustard, herbs, stock cubes etc). I have also cut out pics of food from magazines and helped him put into groups, dairy, carbs, protein etc and explained about vitamins and minerals. They don't get taught all this at school anymore. Anyway, it has worked for him, sorry for the long post.
Rice, salad, grilled fries and some pork/chicken or fish (maybe tuna but not the kind that's all smeared up).
It's also up to you that your kid abides to you and eats what she's told to.
i agree with lynibis helping kids to understand what foods are good for them even doing taste test with diffrent textures of food finding out what it is they dont like about it makes them less of a fussy eater plenty of slow cooker meals are great and easy to do
Thank you for the advice, i may have worded it wrong, I am not looking for inspiration or what to feed my daughter just inspiration for work.
Let me just note I am a chef by trade but my new job involves feeding children.
Can't go wrong with pasta as you can add what you want, and buying pizza bases and letting them add their own toppings. Spag bol is usually popular
Unfortunately the Children aren’t allowed to get involved with the cooking process at all.
