Mid Range Laptop or mid Range Laptop + Gaming Console , Any Opinions Please ?

Ask a Question

My ageing but much loved 5 year old Lenovo Intel I3 17" laptop is (I fear ) reaching the end of its life .

I'm not a gamer but perhaps will be one day . I would really appreciate any advice from the more knowledgeable on here on what my best option would be .

a) Buy a mid range replacement laptop (17") Intel I7 (or AMD equivalent ) with SSD and Nvidea 1650 or 1660 Graphics card for £800 - £1K .

or

b) Buy an Intel I5 or I7 (or AMD equivalent ) 17" laptop again with SSD for about £500 -£700 (without a decent graphics card ) and then purchase an Xbox or PlayStation when I decide to become a part time gamer .

Any advice would be much appreciated - as to be honest I haven't a clue .

I would suggest (and many gamers seem to agree) you'd get yourself a desktop PC for gaming. Laptops are great and generally more convenient, but gaming laptops are usually far more expensive than decent desktops which do the same thing. Also, desktop hardware is easier to upgrade.

Unfortunately I use my current Laptop on my coffee table (not bothered about portability ) . So really a tower or even an All in one isn't really an option without a redesign of my already cluttered lounge !

As a lazy person I like to do as much as possible from the comfort of my sofa to save my energy for playing golf .

Thanks a lot for your advice , much appreciated .

If you don't game I would of thought a fairly entry level laptop would be sufficient. They often have the benefit of far longer battery life too. Something like a Ryzen laptop has fairly decent graphics for a lot of games. A budget of £300 might be sufficient for a pretty decent Ryzen laptop for a 15.6" screen. If you don't need portability though perhaps a mini-pc with wireless keyboard but this will mean your tv is your display output which may not be ideal if different members of the family want to use the tv for other stuff. The mini pc would fit under the tv with your other devices. My mother changed from a normal windows laptop to a chromebook about a year or two ago and the number of requests to fix problems has dropped considerably. All I have to do is change the wifi when she changes broadband suppliers and she occasionally has browser issues which are mainly issues with the sites themselves. Chromebooks are probably the ideal lazy man's computer, they rarely need charging and don't throw up many problems.
