Mondegreens - Have You Got Any?

Ask a Question

For those of you who don't know what a Mondegreen is it's basically when you've misheard the words of a song or poem and think they mean something else

The earliest one that I recall was when I first heard Roy Orbison singing "Only the Lonely" and thought, for quite some time, the words were "Holy Baloney".

Have you got any?

Those wondering how they came to be called Mondegreens might be interested in this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mondegreen

That "I'm a bus driver" was mishearing - "I'm a survivor". Another I remember was from "Sea of Heartbreak" Don Gibson. The words "Come to my rescue. . . come here to me" which were heard as "I'm here to molest you. . . come here to me". These mondegreens can actually be sung and no one ever notices.☺

One that no matter how many times I listen to I'm convinced Céline Dion sings "I believe that the hot dogs go on". Listen just after the minute mark on this:

Does anyone else hear it that way too?

This is a family favourite - 'I get up in the morning, bake beans for breakfast, oooh ooh, me ears are alight' will let you answer the singer......🤔 😆 Ed Sheeran's Shape of you - 'my bedsheets smell of poo'/'my bedsheets smell of you.

In the opening lyrics of The scorpions - Wind of change. I still hear: 'Follow the mass choir down to donkey park' when its actually 'I follow the Moskva down to Gorky Park'
