Moving house... Questions

Probably best not to try and "wing it" unless they are asking a daft price . Many years ago I bought my present house and negotiated a price for the (excellent quality ) Lounge /Dining room carpet and a couple of sets of curtains .

Did not think that the fitted bedroom carpets were worth the asking price so I said so politely . TBH expecting them to be left . Nope they went and what use is a cheap fitted bedroom carpet in another house ?

If you want them and they are in working order try a counter offer . After all even if working now you have no idea if they will still work in a few months . If they are moving a houseful it is unlikely it will cost much more to take along a washer and a dryer . Perhaps they want new stuff in their next house ? and we all know a second hand washing machine or dryer is worth very little .

When we bought our first house we had the option of buying all the white goods in the house, but they wanted £2000 so we said no and bought new ones.

When we sold that house we informed any potential buyers that the white goods were being left and we didn't want any extra for them. When we bought our current house I made sure to ask what white goods, if any, were being left in the house and it was only the oven as it was integrated.

As they are moving house it is likely they will be taking furniture etc with them so taking the washing machine etc will not be anymore of a hassle for them. Do not wing it. The only items that have to be left in the house are items that are integrated, fitted (such as blinds, flooring, light fixtures) or items that would cause damage if removed.

Come up with a counter offer and see what happens, you can always make a slightly higher second offer if they reject the first.

I would counter offer. You have you have nothing to lose, as if they decide to take them, you can still get new, or secondhand on marketplace etc.

Always good to keep a decent relationship during the buying process, it could be worth it if any delays or problems come up, or if you are lucky, they could end up leaving more!

All items being left should be stated by the estate agent. If it’s not mentioned then get them to find out for you. Make the estate agent work for their high fee, I know you’re not the one paying the fee.

These days you have to declare everything that is being left behind so they would be going against the 'rules' to just leave anything that hasn't already been declared. If you want to negotiate with them for their old appliances then I would do it direct with them, but find out how old the appliances are first!

With our house they wanted asking price . Which we didn't want to give, so we said if you leave some furniture we would may agree for asking price, they agreed they'd leave the sofa, table, one of the wardrobes and a bed as well. Worth an ask.

When we last moved we were just lucky certain items had been left. I would never buy at an additional cost.

We were left behind a washing machine and a fridge. We didn’t need the fridge but as it had a utility room we kept the washing machine and also had our own.

always best to ask what they plan on doing with goods like that sometimes theyre willing to give you a really good discounted price and it saves them having to move more its out themselves, by winging it you could be left with nothing so its always wise to have a plan

I would negotiate. They obviously don’t want to bring them so will probably be happy to accept an offer. What would you be happy paying? Go with that. If they don’t accept, go with plan B and buy new.

Think you need to negotiate a price a lot will depend on what Brand they are , the condition and the age really, compare this with what you are able to buy new for a similar price.

When we moved we negotiated on various items , the only thing we couldn't agree on was the dining room furniture , so they took that , a few weeks later saw it advertised for less than what we were willing to pay, but by then we didn't want it anyway .

InaShah also have a look on marketplace & gumtree for the secondhand value of the items they are offering. Are they worth the £150? This will help you counter offer if you decide to do that!

If i was the seller i would be grateful i had managed to sell and just leave it anyway , unless it was in bad condition

Did you decide what to do InaShah? You seem like a person who doesn’t like to take a gamble, so maybe you would be best buying new if you can afford it. Bear in mind that most white goods only come with a 12 month guarantee though.
