Naming a Star

Ask a Question

Over the years I have bought my little sis (she is 43) Christmas presents that have got sister on. mugs, candles photo frames and things like that

Now I have looked in to one of the gifts where you name a star,

my sister is in to astrology if that's right moon and stars... and has loads of telescopes

Now would it be tacky to buy one of these as I know you don't pick a star only name it

I would be grateful for people's opinions and if anyone has bought one

What do you think of this?

I would think if she’s into astrology then she would love it, I personally wouldn’t like it but I’m not into that sort of thing..

When my granddaughter was born my ex named a star for her and my daughter was over the moon with such a novel idea.

I think it’s a wonderful idea especially if she is into astrology 😀 not tacky at all and I’m sure your sister will appreciate the gesture.

Sounds more like astronomy that astrology (horoscopes). Is it officially recognised as the name of the star? I thought you had to discover them to name them. I'm thinking this is only a registry held by the company offering the service and not related to the actual name of the star officially most of which are just a sequence of numbers.

Personally I can't see why there isn't a worldwide registry that officially accepts such naming. The money could go to good causes. I don't see much point in independent registration of star names myself that aren't used by astronomers but just filed somewhere.

I came here to say the same kind of thing, but you've beaten me to it.

No but it’s a cute different gift. I heard you can also buy a tiny plot of land from somewhere and it gives you the title of lady

I think it's a complete waste of money personally. You could name a star yourself without paying anyone! Print out a certificate job done ! Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. Why not take her somewhere instead?

Not sure how can it be legit to name a star...Usually people name them, when they discover them.
