New Puppy - Any Tips or Advice?
Ask a Question
We will have a puppy joining our family next week and was just wondering if anyone had any tips or advice? Any products I should buy or essentials that I need.
Chew toys! Save your furniture straight outside after being fed and at regular intervals to try to cut out accidents asap good luck with your new fur baby
Nikki0710 we had training pads but they were mainly used in his cage incase of accidents through the night as it took our dog a while to start making noise to show he wanted out. He would stand at the door through the day and we would know but didn’t make it obvious for a while. Good luck
A crate is a life saver as cute as puppies are, make sure you start training them, lots of treats help.
My dog was a nightmare as a puppyI can laugh about it now,but he was very destructive x
Nikki0710 my puppy chewed floorboards, the door of the washing machine,sofa..toys...(to name a few) he had separation anxiety,it took forever to get him to be calmI think i watched every episode of the dog whisperer, the grate really helped x
Mctash alapaha bulldog it took a year to train him we rescued him, there were a few behaviour issues,he is five now and is rather settled, spoiled x
Ow bless lmao mines well be hivee d but she still nawty just does things differently lmao
Fink may have turned her into brat so in training the bad my own fault but shes are baby since losing cat and then dog 2 days after nina090976
A cage or crate does sometimes sound cruel but sometimes needed with a puppy to be able to calm down and rest while you clear up it’s mess!
eyeballkerry I've bought a crate because pre-covid we travelled alot as a family so would love for him to have his own space/safe haven, something familiar wherever we go.
Crates aren't cruel with cruel is to get dog leave it in 1 all day long all night@Nikki0710
My advice is until it has had its parvovirus vaccinations DO NOT allow it outside except when carried, and keep it away from other dogs. Reading this will explain why. https://www.akc.org/expert-advice/health/parvo-in-dogs/
I cant give any advice im afraid but please dont forget to post a picture of your new fur baby
When you feed the puppy always give any children something to eat first, this will make the puppy see children as pack leaders and will respect them and will leave them alone. We did this with our daughter when we got our dogs, they listen to her and obey her, but also mother her
puppy pads, chew toys, i wouldnt buy a puffy bed because my pups always chewed them up! i was replacing every other week lol.
also getting good lasting food bowls! and starting a good diet! i used to use bakers until one day a vet told me they have loads of additives in that make your dogs go nuts! and my dog was mental so it explained why lol.
HollyDolly22 oh no I've got a lovely fluffy bed for him! Will have to save it until I feel hes ready to graduate to the expensive one hes currently on food brand 'Hills'. I have some lovely ceramic bowls hoping they last long.
Nikki0710 you could try him with it. Just all my dogs have always chewed through theirs ceramic bowls are good to! Good luck with the newbie
We have a German shepherd and antlers and buffalo horns are a god sent and were even more so when she was a pup!
A crate is a must. You need somewhere safe to leave pup while your preoccupied, it's impossible to watch them 24/7. It's also important they have their own safe space that they can go to rest when they want some peace ✌. Begin training immediately. We have a JRT, if we gave him an inch he would take a mile. Be consistent will training, if your pups anything like our boy he/she will find & take any loopholes .
My only other advice is too socialize pup as soon as able, almost impossible during this current climate unfortunately, but please do as soon as safe to do so.
I agree with Glitterandgold you need to socialise the pup. Ask your vet as I know ours had puppy classes just for this reason. Obviously COVID is the spanner in the works so not sure if they are running these. Last thing I would recommend is 2 fold - use an old alarm clock in conjunction with a hot water bottle. Put both under their bedding. The clock mimics their mohers heartbeat and the hot water bottle will give some warmth for them to settle. I am not a vet or animal professional, but it worked a dream with my 2 rescues. Good luck.
Not got any tips as our dog wasn't a puppy when we got him but wishing you all luck and happiness
When our dog was a puppy she chewed the legs on our kitchen table and chairs so I suggest getting lots of chew toys and protecting any wooden furniture that could be used. We had puppy pads for accidents at night. Agree with others saying straight outside after being fed. Don't take them out for walks until they have had their vaccinations. Socialise your puppy as much as possible, tough just now I know. Make sure they have a safe space in the house that is just theirs.
