The Royal Mint has no plans to make new 2p or £2 coins for the next 10 years.
A coin mountain lies in storage as demand has dropped, in contrast to banknotes.
Coin-making has been cut by The Royal Mint but stocks of every coin in circulation are exceeding its targets. For £2 coins, the hoard is 26 times over target.
I’m not surprised, because even if I do handle cash, I rarely see 2p or £2 coins - in contrast, there are often lots of 1p and £1 coins about
I've been expecting this kind of change I haven't seen a £2 coin in ages. I tend to only use cash in places that don't accept cards or have a minimum spend requirement.
yes, it seems like a lot of places are phasing out cash, so anytime I do see a ‘cash only’ sign, I chuckle at how retro they are
I only use cash if I have to now and with stores asking people to use contactless now cash may become obsolete in a few years
I reckon it will still be around for a while yet. There are still people who refuse to use cards as they don’t want to leave a trail...
I've never heard of that sounds a little paranoid especially when we leave trails using a smart phone, anything Facebook Alexa ect
People worry about big brother but have you seen what Facebook and Amazon have on file? Amazon even keep your order history after you die hspexy
Imnotcheap I’m not surprised. I knew someone who wouldn’t even get an oyster card back in the day as he said he didn’t want people to know where he’s been. Strangely enough, he did make up a FB account, but he rarely used it
I wouldn't like to see the end of cash, what would you do if the power goes out, or there’s a blip in the electronic systems or even cyber attack! How would you buy them toilet rolls!
Very true. If we ever get the chance to go abroad again, we would definitely need cash, as not all vendors will have the facilities to take card, particularly when it comes to foreign transactions
It's been over 3 months since I paid for anything in cash quite happy to continue that way
