Old People Should Embrace Mass Suicide, Says Yale Professor

In the News

Remind me never to move to Japan

If this Japanese professor from Yale gets his way there will not be an elderly population there anymore

He suggests old people in Japan should kill themselves to avoid burdening the state

What sort of a professor is he , a throwback from the second world war in Germany ?

For me his comments are absolutely shocking

I wonder whether he would be saying the same if he was in his sixties or seventies ?

This isn't far from Canada's MAID system (Medical Assistance in Dying).

I'm against suicide, but if people (over 18 and are fully aware of the consequences), they should be free to do so without the permission of a government. One way of peacefully going would be in a forest surrounded by nature.

Still, these people promoting schemes for people to die is just sick.

PhilipMarc I agree P, if there is a series medical reason for someone not wanting to live then i understand, but to want to euthanise people because they are old when possibly in very good health is barbaric

Japanese lifespan is one of the highest if not the highest in the world and they want to increase retirement age to 70. Maybe that’s where our government got their idea from!

Pjran Probably p, also the elderly in Japan are amongst the healthiest in the world, so less reason to not want them alive, purely a financial decision if it happens

How old elderly people are is your personal perspective. At 10, you think 30 is old. (I don't I'm not 10. Just making a point) So I suspect he would somehow think he didn't have to be included.

Imnotcheap When I was 10 I used to think people aged 30 were old, but turns out they're/we're still quite young.

Imnotcheap What frightens me is he is a professor, so you would think someone of intelligence , i wonder what his grandparents think of what he has said, unless he has already used them as guinea pigs as part of his thesis ?

PhilipMarc I had to read that twice P, at first glance it looked like you were 101 if it wasn't for the space and being I not 1 , i was going to say you are doing well still posting at your age 😉

telmel I wouldn't be surprised if the professor didn't have a close relationship with his parents or grandparents growing up. Sounds like a psychopath to me. I just hope none of his followers decide they should help out by killing their grandparents

Imnotcheap I hope not I, i always thought the Japanese had a high regard and respect for their family and elderly relatives , and then he comes along with this

I suppose his next suggestion would be that anyone taking 'early retirement' would have their pensions passed on to their families , ie the likes of him , up to a pre determined age 🤔

This actually reminds me of the sci fi film Logan's Run from1976, but here the maximum age you could live to was 30

telmel I'd say he too self righteous and arrogant for that, wonder if sick people next on his list.

He forgets that elderly people still have things to offer, he could do with some words of wisdom

Imnotcheap You are so right, you can see how much they are needed in the UK now , the government wants them to carry on working and not take early retirement due to the shortage of manpower , but it is a shame it is purely for this reason and not because they are valued

A bit extreme. A painful and messy way to go. His choice of glasses suggest an eccentric attention seeker and/or Elton John fan and/or Harry Potter doppelganger who chose Slytherin.

Although, if a similar policy was implemented a few years ago we wouldn't have witnessed the terrible Soylent Green riots in 2022.

I agree with euthanasia If someone is very ill and chooses to die. But this should be their choice and not down to social pressure. My nan is 80 and still volunteering for charities, she even drives the elderly in her village to hospital appointments. She certainly isn't a burden.

Well this just adds fuel to my constant wittering on about population, but I want it to be controlled by contraception and careless parents not having too many kids!

This guy needs to be first in the queue no matter what his age. Doesn't he realise that every member of any society is a burden on the state from conception to death😡

We all need food, medical resources, water, education, clothing, housing so when he can live without any of that I might listen to him, not!!!!!

I think he said it to get free publicity for his job title and his views of the elderly. Fingers cross he will either be suspended from his job or be given a stern warning for having such extremist view of another human being.
