Olio App

Other

Does anyone use the app olio? It's just like to good to go but it's free. Supermarkets or cafes give volunteers food that can't be sold the next day. Nothing wrong with it. You pick it up from the volunteers house

I have it downloaded but I've never been quick enough to be able to get anything that I wanted. I guess the popular stuff is much sort after and gets snapped up.

It can be like that and I guess with the cost of living more people are using it.

Yes I try to use it and try to advertise it to others, it isn't massive in my area but will continue to let people know about it.

Supermarkets and other places have to pay for OLIO volunteers to collect their food and flowers that they will no longer be able to sell past midnight or sometimes there is a decent date on them. Which I guess some companies may not want to do as it is an additional cost, but it helps save waste and helps out local people. Food Waste Heroes sadly do it from their own time and cost though, as we have collections in our area but not in the main town, so people have to use transport of some kind to get there and we all know that Petrol and other things don't come cheap either.

It isn't just food though, anyone can upload any items that they want to rehome, just not any on the prohibited list, so no medication or animals.

You can see the list here: help.olioex.com/article/100-what-can-cant-be-shared-on-olio#

I've given away lots of items before, from new items and used, I'm always grateful and have received a few items myself from the app too.

You can also now loan out items and put a wanted post up if there is something you are looking for in particular.

They used to have a handmade section for sales, but it got abused with everyone trying to get away with selling lots of items, not just made things and I don't think it fitted in with their 'reduce waste' criteria they are aiming for too.

It isn't for 'those in need' either which some people assume, it is all about reducing waste, it is often a first come first serve basis or those that are polite, it isn't who is in the most need.

I used to volunteer for it. I love it. It's really good. I get bits and share with the neighbours

Olio isn't great where we are. There is hardly anyone on it, there aren't any businesses on it here. I've tried to use it, but it just doesn't work well in our area.

If maybe worth contacting olio and getting them to work in the area to improve it

ellengully it's not the app that's the problem though, it's that hardly anyone uses it. Not sure how they would be able to improve uptake.
