Opinions on Being an Adult Learner

I have done a degree, a diploma and a safety exam in adulthood, I stupidly did them alongside a full time job, wouldn't suggest that method to anyone. Neither the degree or diploma have helped me in my working life, but that is down to me more than anything else.

If you can afford to do it and know exactly what to do then I would definitely recommend it, any learning is good especially in adulthood where your brain isn't as nimble as it used to be. What are you thinking of studying and where do you want it to take you?

If you can afford to do it and have the time, then yes, go for it. Learning isn't something in my opinion that stops when you leave school. I'm always trying to learn new things even if its not for a job. I like to keep my mind active. For eg, 12 years ago I got into photography, learnt about that. Now I'm a big gardener and I've gotten a good knowledge of plants which I never used to have. I tend to read/study a lot on theology/the occult and the esoteric nowadays but in the past psychology was a big fave of mine. Never to old to learn. I wanted to go back to uni but I can't afford it and I don't want to get loans. Having a mortgage is bad enough so I can't do it, but if you can, then yes, go for it.

I'm doing my 3rd degree. It's related to my job. I also continued whilst on maternity leave. It's demanding but it will be worth it.

My opinion is, you should never stop learning. It is one thing to be lacking in intelligence (that cannot be helped and can apply to the nicest people) but being ignorant is another matter.

Everyone is capable of reading a book or watching a current affairs programme, improving themselves so they can hold their own in a conversation or do a simple pub quiz.

After my children left home I went to adult education classes in creative writing, English grammar and literature, basic counselling skills, Psychology, aromatherapy and much more. At work I took every course going. Communication skills, diversity, even a funeral course.

I am not an expert in any of these subjects but I can contribute to life. I would say to anyone keep learning, there is never a good reason to stop.

PS I left school at 15.

When i was studying philosophy in college, we had someone in his 70s as a class mate, and he was determined to study as many subjects he wasn’t able to do previously. I guess when you’ve retired, you’ve got loads of time on your hands

Its something im considering at the moment. Ive done qualifications through work as an adult. I'm looking at distance learning so online in my own time

I go to a language school if that counts? It's not a university or diploma or anything... I find it extremely different learning a subject as an adult than my memories of learning at school. I find it easier now, but I don't know why. Perhaps how they teach it is different, or that it's a small class (5 people vs. 40), or that as you're older you have more relatable experience to attach the lessons too.
