Owning a Motor Home

It was always my dream ..... not going to happen now bit it was nice to hope ..... happily we now live in a lovely place!

I nearly did once before I looked further into it . Its an expensive toy that loses money every day , has to be insured and sits on your drive for 45 weeks of the year ! You can't park it up anywhere when you actually holiday in it so you have to pay site fees whenever you stop .

I seriously looked into it , but do the sums and they don't add up unless you are going to be using it for holidaying 40+ weeks of the year .

If you fancy it ,hire one for a week to see how it goes . Not saying don't but its a lot of money down the drain if you aren't going to use it fully .

I'd love one of the classic VW Campers

Trouble is they cost a bomb, and don't look that roomy.

I've always fancied a motorhome but the more I think about it the more I think I'd like a small van conversion so I can park it more easily and not so restricted where I can take it. Like maybe a VW Transporter or Mazda Bongo etc. So you can use it for sleeping for emergencies. If you do go to a camping site you can use their washing and toilet facilities and if necessary you could always take a tent to expand capacity. I do like the larger coachbuilt motorhomes but the costs ramp up considerably.

I'm down in the south west and I don't have to travel far to get to the beaches etc I want to go to and if I did want to travel further I'd be quite happy making use of travelodges etc to stay overnight with a Bongo etc parked up. I'd also like to take it places to cycle so I would do a loop starting and ending at the Bongo where I can have a meal and a cup of tea, perhaps a little rest before driving back.

I just feel for my use a coachbuilt motorhome would be over the top. Many people convert people carriers into mini motorhomes with a tiny kitchen and bed, with a tv and a few other facilities and I think I'd be happy with that.

I grew up going on holiday all over Europe in a motorhome, as a kid i loved it! But i can see it being quite an expensive thing to own, like Golfforall says - it sits on your drive most of the year.

My neighbour has one , but gets very little use from it maybe 4-5 weeks per years, told me the road tax is £540 per year, plus the maintenance, insurance running costs and site fees. Each to their own but hardly seems worthwhile having one unless your going to get regular use from one.
