I shop at Sainsbury's in town and the car park is fee paying, which you get back when paying for your shopping. I paid for one hour (I have never NOT paid) and went home, this was end of November.
Today I got a parking fine letter (first one in nearly 40 years of driving) for £70, but £42 if paid within 14 days.
When I looked at the letter closely, I entered at 1044 and left at 1147. Didn't even register that I had gone 3 mins over nor that the car park was not run by Sainsbury's.
Most expensive 3 minutes I have ever spent and I did wonder about the 10 minute 'period of grace' that apparently now includes private car parks.
Tell them you were putting your trolley back... but if it’s private car park. Don’t make contact. Cost them more to take you to court for the sake of three mins over. Bandits
It isn't too good an idea not to make contact, since clamping was banned private car park owners do take people to court (it's a civil matter). The cost of taking people to court doesn't enter into the equation because the person who got the ticket eventually pays that. Ignoring the notification has cost some people thousands.
If they were able to get your address from the DVLA they must be ATA members, and here's the good news: "ATA members must give you an extra 10 minutes before giving you a Parking Charge Notice".

Ah no sorry to year this parking has been suspended in our town due to COVID. Do you suffer health condition like asthma say you had an attack and had to take a minute catch your breath
It's best never to be untruthful to try to avoid paying, if you use health grounds evidence may be requested if it can't be provided things really go against you, In Lyn's case I doubt they will pursue the matter especially if Lyn "attacks" by reporting them to the association they are a member of, three minutes is nowhere near a reasonable enough grace period to leave the car park.
It's my opinion that they are "chancing it" hoping people will cough up and such behaviour could lose them membership of whatever ATA they belong to.
I hope Lyn will let us know which ATA they belong to, If it's the BPA (British Parking Association) they don't stand a chance.
I am reasonably certain all other ATAs have a similar code of practice.

I have written a scathing letter containing a copied and pasted article from the BPA website which they are indeed a member of and said exactly what you did David, that they expect people to roll over and just pay up. I am sending first class today and will let you all know the result in due course.
Lynibis I hope (even if they say they are not pursuing the matter) that you also notify the BPA. You could help others who might be victims.

It isn't really a fine - the notification is technically an invoice saying what they're charging you for the time in excess of what you were allowed or paid for. If you don't pay it can end up in a small claims court.

I will probably crumble and pay it because they will delay answering, I will be scared of it going up to £70 and then worry they will pursue me in court.
