Hi son has new play station what’s difference between the play station member ship and the play station plus please.
he already has Xbox ultimate but now will have both
PlayStation Plus and Xbox LIVE Gold are pretty much the same thing. Paid subscription with online play and "free" games to download.
Since he has Game Pass Ultimate (assuming you meant that by "Xbox Ultimate"), that ought to be more than plenty. It gives him access to Game Pass so there's a ton of games he can download and play.
So does this mean I don’t need to buy a play station membership and can connect both consoles on one. Sorry if sound thick but gaming and technology is not my finest
No, each subscription is for each cinsole.
It'd be cheaper for you just to stick with one subscription, which the Xbox sub would be.

Do you mean PlayStation now and PlayStation plus? If so PlayStation plus is the equivalent of Xbox live gold and PlayStation now is the equivalent of Xbox game pass. The ultimate being Xbox live and game pass together.
Your son will need PlayStation plus if he wants to play online multiplayer. Think there are some exceptions like the ‘free to play’ games like fortnite
