All initiatives that gather 100,000 signatures in 12 (maybe) 18 months go to a public vote and can then be introduced as a new law. This is something that’s used in Switzerland and they are a very happy country.

We at least have a system where it has to be discussed in parliament if a certain amount of signatures are reached.

That's a terrible idea, but Switzerland is a great country so they can handle it. Others.. not so much.
People make dumb petitions of everything these days and I'm glad they go unsuccessful.
