Is It Possible to Eat Healthily, but Enjoyably?

Other

I find it extremely hard to eat healthily. Everything seems to have too much salt, sugar or fat and guilt is uppermost whenever i enjoy my food because it is invariably full of bad stuff.

Of course i can eat a bit of meat and a pile of veg but how boring is that. Too much carbs not good and mostly converts to sugar, too many sweets, cakes, biscuits loaded with sugar, crisps with fat and carbs. Even drinks are hard to find, we are not drinking alcohol at xmas so tea, coffee or water seems to be the choice as everything else is loaded with sugar or sugar substitutes, and the jury cant make up their minds on that still! And lets not get into preservatives and additives!!!

The only thing that I don't have are artificial sweeteners in drinks, otherwise I eat how I please. Life's too short imo.

I will be trying to make better meals in the New Year, but it won't be anything boring. I've got too lazy in the last 6 months and haven't been at my best, so I've been eating crap, but it has been nice crap

TheChimp Yes, that's my problems with drinks. Won't use sweeteners but D2 means keeping sugar intake down. As most know on here I live alone so am so lazy at cooking healthy regular meals for myself. It is so much easier to grab a sandwich, sausage roll, chips, etc which are all loaded with carbs. As I am getting on doc says must reduce this and reduce that and I am very aware life is very short at the mo!!! Everything is so full of rubbish these days, even something as innocent as a sausage. Anyway if you are interested I use half spoon sugar which is totally the same as ordinary sugar but you only need to use half the amount, although it costs twice as much lol but lasts twice as long. No after tastes or anything bad except it is sugar which in itself is not too good. Still, I get away with half a teaspoon in my coffee rather than a whole one.

Lynibis Have you tried erythritol as a sugar substitute L , ?

It is one of the safest on the market , you can get it at amazon, you might find it cheaper elsewhere

Heres some info about it , a comparison, and a link for amazon

www.amazon.co.uk/erythritol/s?k=erythritol

Which is safer erythritol or xylitol?

So, which one is healthier? A study in Caries Research found that erythritol might be better for tooth health than xylitol. And compared to xylitol, erythritol can be fully absorbed by our bodies, causing less digestive distress. Plus, erythritol doesn't raise blood sugar at all, while xylitol has a small impact.Oct 12, 2017

Lynibis I found that putting a little bit less sugar in my coffee every few days worked well, to the point that I now drink it without. Then again I don't have a sweet tooth so perhaps it was easier?

G0501 yes, I used to take two couple of decades ago, then one now half. A good side effect is that my teeth have seen much less treatment.

martinlufc5637 I must admit that is the way I am thinking at the moment. I won't deliberately go overboard but to be honest I would sooner drop dead suddenly than linger in a care home for 10 years!

Mr T has D2 too. He has lost 3 stone but now feels that he would prefer to have a little of whatever he fancies. To compound his problem he lost his sense of taste and smell 10 years ago and feels meals are bland enough without taking out everything that produces anything that he might just taste (salts & sugars), he would rather live a shorter life than cut everything out altogether. (Luckily there is very little that he won't eat.) It is difficult but you have to do what feels best for you individually.

tumblespots I am beginning to think Mr T has the right idea. Obviously I am not going to be greedy and eat rubbish constantly but I am not sure I want to live a life of deprivation. Food is such an enjoyable part of life, and very sociable. Constantly eating badly and becoming obese is another matter entirely and that too can spoil your enjoyment of life. I am looking forward to spring and summer as I do find it easier to eat more sensibly then.

Lynibis It is easier in the warmer months but even then you have to be careful of the natural sugars in fruit! There is always something out there to try and get you...

tumblespots Absolutely! Hundreds of years ago it was food hygiene now it is big companies who don't seem to care how healthy or not our food is as long as we buy it and make them rich. There was a small window between the two when I feel we all ate a lot healthier, but that is long gone.

Lynibis The food companies have sold us down the river by increasing the salt and sugar content in foods to make them desirable, to make us yearn for them. We have to reeducate ourselves away from over processed foods as they seem to be the worst offenders. I hate processed foods but Mr T does like them (I call them ready chewed muck). I'd rather have a piece of meat and make something out of it but I know that not everyone has the time to do that. It's all give and take.

The problem is a lot of processed food has sugar in it and sugar is very addictive. If you eat healthy it can taste bland at first but as you reduce sugar intake natural things start to taste better in time

You can wean yourself off sugar, i used to take sugar with my tea when i was younger but now i don't , i drink white tea anyway without milk or sugar, i just put an alternative sugar in the odd cup of coffee and take that black too

My downfall is chocolate , i do go zero sugar sometimes but mainly have normal bars , especially with nuts , at least there is some goodness there 😄

I don't like a lot healthy food lol and I'm fussy anyway so a bit troublesome for me but thankfully there's so more variety out there. I wish I liked green tea or any other herbal tea..

I use the traffic light system a lot when shopping and I do put items back that have red on them. I only drink green tea, water and milk. I do not add sugar or salt to my food.

eyeballkerry I must admit I do quite a lot of that but not green tea. However, I may be good in that area but still find myself eating a lot of rubbish as it's quick, easy, convenient and only me to cater for.

Lynibis I know what you mean about being convenient. I do however love all types of nuts which are suppose to be good for you in moderation.
