Potential Change to the Points System - We'd like Your Feedback!

Latest Deals

Hi guys,

We're thinking about making a small tweak to the points system but would like your feedback before we do anything 🙂

What we might change:

  • Remove points for liking posts (potentially 25 less points per day)
  • Increase the points for commenting by raising the number of comments you get points for per day from 5 to 7 (an extra 40 points per day)
Why we're thinking of making this change:
  • We 100% want to reward the community for all their hard work. That's why we'd overall increase the number of points you can earn every day.
  • We're wondering if by not incentivising people to like deals we'll get a more genuine view of whether a deal is good or bad. Hopefully making it easier for everyone to spot a bobby dazzler from a damp squib.
We'd love to hear everyone's feedback! If people love it - we'll try and get it live ASAP. If you all think it's the worst idea ever then we'll stick it in the bin 😁

Not really , if peeps are being dodgy then they will just click the first 5 deals sequentially to get their points - if the devops guys do their stuff and implements an algorithm to check this #(quite a simple thing to do) then it is easy to see who the shills are and penalise them or just send them a polite warning.

I only click deals i like - i mean if you are looking through the list of deals page after page like i do to catch up to find interesting stuff to buy then how difficult is it really to click the ones you like - i think you are being overly critical of most members on here - i think this site has a far better reputation than HUKD which is a horrendous site full of argumentative knowitalls and trolls and quite the most politically correct mods and members of any deals site on the internet - mostly men unfortunately, whereas this site is mostly women and to be fair it seems the fairer sex are more honest, polite and friendly which makes this site a more enjoyable experience and reliable dontya think?

garygemmell I agree... I have only been to HUKD to "demand" removal of my copyrighted material the place is run by morons, some of the trolls who frequent the site have been here starting trouble - fortunately they're soon evicted.

Honestly, I get fed up of all the point changes here. I can't even keep up what we get for what anymore. I know there's less than there used to be. I am going to be trying to hit the £35 amazon voucher this year - and I say this year because that's how long it takes. I've been here since 2017. People moan about it. I wish my life was so simple that all I had to worry about was who was liking what here at latest deals. The last 3 years I had to stop what I was doing for living due to ill health, got forced to move out of my house due to my neighbours, etc and yet there are people who are getting all up tight because someone posted a deal which they don't think was a good deal and their deal was better but they didn't get enough likes for it. Really? No offense everyone but count your blessings if that is all you have to worry about. It seems to me that the more people moan about points the less points there are and hitting the vouchers gets harder. Clearly I'm not just here for that as I've only hit 2 targets since 2017 before anyone comes back with I shouldn't be here just for vouchers. Gets on my nerves. There you go. There's my view. I don't expect anyone to agree but that's ok because when you are an aspie, no one sees anything from your world view.

Oh dear. Well firstly I have been a member for about same time, early 2017. The points system has not changed at all in that time and is clearly set out on dashboard what you can earn and for what.

I work a 6 day week most weeks but before I go to work I post 3 deals and 5 likes, only those I think are good value. I then 'chat' during the evening and get another 100 points though I can often make 10 comments as I like to chat with or without points. This is 425 points per day without really trying, 2,975 per week, 10 weeks = 29,750 so off the top of my head around 16/17 weeks to get £50 voucher so that is £150 per year without really trying. Add a few topics, comps and reports, if genuine, and it is even more.

I am really truly sorry you have had such a hard time but Tom has asked a question to gauge our reaction and some of us have given our opinions, so good little democracy.

I hope 2020 is a much better year for you, but maybe it is a good idea not to have a go at those who are not responsible for your bad time as I am sure we all wish you well.

PS what is an aspie?

MrsCraig but aren't all the topics on here mostly trivial? And I doubt there is a single person on here who hasn't had tragedy and hardship in their life, I certainly have. It doesn't mean I can't chat about meaningless, unimportant things and we are, after all, being given a say in the way the site issues points.

Hi MrsCraig I hope you didn't remove your posts because of my reply, I have re-read it and didn't feel it would offend you in any way, if you have taken it amiss then I apologise as it was certainly not my intention. We all complain from time to time about trivial chat topics. I was just pointing out that despite despair in our personal life we can still look forward to hopefully a brighter future. You have been through more than most but remain upbeat, long may that continue.

Lynibis no it had nothing to do with your reply, I was in no way offended by it and did not take it amiss at all. I took it down just incase it would have offended anyone, as I certainly would not want to do that. Just because I didn't think it was worth complaining about doesn't mean that someone else doesn't and that should be respected.

I agree that we need to talk about trivial and meaningless things and complain about them too from time to time, goodness knows it is probably what gets us all through the difficult times.

I've always tried to be upbeat as otherwise things would have just collapsed around me and I wouldn't have coped. Plus I still had my son to look after and we needed to make each day as happy as possible for him. And you are right, despite the despair we went through, he now has a very bright and happy future ahead of him, hopefully full of complaining about trivial things!

I didn't mean to upset or offend anyone, which is why I removed the comment, just incase it had done that, as it was not my intention and if it did upset or offend then I am truly sorry.

MrsCraig ah, well nice to know neither of us offended and I certainly saw nothing at all wrong in your comment. Life is very complicated these days on any form of social media but I personally think it is ok to disagree as long as it's friendly, hopefully Shelly can see that. It's a bit late but hope 2020 brings you only good things and lots of fun with your son as he learns more. I love age 1 to 3 when they are toddlers.

Chatting about "meaningless" stuff to one person may not be meaningless to someone else!

Its the reason our society is in such dire straits because no one has the balls to stand up for what they believe in!

Does it really matter what anyone says! as its all about revenue and you will cut what you need from the cloth to maximise your profits - I have not seen altruism in business for decades and i doubt i ever will so just do what you have to please the accountants, the small people do not matter, never have done , never will and that sadly is life in a commercial and consumer society!

If you were honest you would actually admit you are asking "if we remove this incentive how many members will we lose or how much input will we lose from our members"

The answer is you wont have any likes at all and you will have to employ mods once the comments get nasty , trolling, argumentative etc - Thats the way of things with people - believe me i have worked on many websites and forums and have experienced it myself - Just take a look at HUKD and its messy argumentative and hostile environment its not a nice place to post a deal so that why i gave up on it and came on here!

Sad to say but this site is mostly inhabited by women hence the lack of arguments and nastiness - says a lot about us guys eh but if it works as this site does then why change it - Doesnt your marketing guys know the old KISS methodology - back to marketing school!

Although I'm not bothered either way just wanted to put a bit of different perspective on this .

I understand that some people are liking posts just to get the points, but I also think that most people who post deals, want their posts to be liked and when they are it spurns them on to post further deals and participate in the site more . If the post are not being liked as much some users may take that as a form of rejection. Adding points to the comments to encourage more interaction that way will possibly result in just a load of extra meaningless comments just made for the points.

If changes are being made o the site definitely any P&P costs need to be shown clearly unless Click n collect or store pick up is available .

I do not mind to be honest because the comments will bring more points.

Maybe liking a post should get 1/2 points just so that does not die down on a good deal. But I definitely prefer reading through the chat section.

The problem is even if something is a good deal. Does that actually make people purchase that item is the issue with liking a good deal.

Like
AliceBell64468

I don’t mind either way but I think that if people stop getting points for their likes then you will probably find nobody likes anything! It will be a good test to see if people actually bother to leave a like if they don’t get no points in return.

Like

It will indeed be a good test to see - I am almost certain which way that test will go having seen many totally rubbish deals with numerous likes (presumably from the "that's one of my five a day merchants" and really good deals (that don't seem that great from the title) with just a few.

It makes the "likes" totally meaningless - I've not taken any notice of them for a long time. I might start doing if and when those likes haven't been bought.

I love this site , but surely the aim should not be to just acquire points for Amazon vouchers ? Only been a member for a few months but it is painfully obvious that members are liking anything ,posting non deals and even expiring legit deals just for their daily points .

Of course I 100% support removal of points for just clicking to "like" a deal - but maybe go further ? Reward members whose deals attract likes and comments ? (if points are no longer given for "likes " then any "like" given would be a genuine reflection that the deal is a good one )

I personally post many deals that I know are "great deals " (mainly high end golf deals ) so obviously not everyone will consider them as I do .

I also post deals (at the moment mid range laptops ) which after looking at many , I "consider" good deals and post to get members opinions both positive and negative - still waiting for any comments on any of my laptop deals though quite a few likes (which mean nothing really ).

We all know what a good price for a tin of beans or a bag of frozen chips is and posting great deals for such should always be rewarded with a like (as I always do ). To be fair not much to comment on - but it wouldn't hurt members to comment "well spotted ,next cheapest I have seen is x pence " Alternatively "Sorry but you can get these at XYZ for x pence less "

With Laptops or Televisions the same could apply . I yearn for comments (good or bad ) when I post one . For instance "same model available for £20 less at *** " or "not a bad machine but for £20 more you could get *** at *** retailer .

Do you notice a theme here ? Correct ! we are not really on this site to gain Amazon vouchers ( that's a welcome bonus ), we are here to share excellent deals we have found with our fellow members .

Whether it be beans ,chips ,laptops or televisions etc etc you are looking for I guarantee you will save more by interacting with the membership , commenting fully on deals , adding your expertise and opinions than by just mindlessly clicking your way to an Amazon voucher .

Members its down to you ! What do you want ? A site full of dross deals with random "likes" sprinkled around with no relevance to the merits of the deal . Or a site that has useful, constructive, even critical comments on the deals shared ?

I know what I would like , but it depends upon members contributing their opinions /expertise .

Like
garygemmell

Does not work like that it will just end up like HUKD with loads of off topic arguments and requiring mods to then check threads when they get nasty and argumentative - its a balancing act but HUKD is terrible it has one MOD called ANDYWEDGE who will ban you if you say anything he deems not politically correct and lets all his friends post what they want, you will have members who post nonsense and troll constantly creating new logins to back themselves up and create false replies = believe me its a nightmare to administer - its sadly what led to the demise of my much loved sci-fi channel forum and the afterdark horror scifi forum and many others!

The old adage KISS is what is needed - keep it simple and if it works why change it!

This site gets a good rep because there are little arguments , few knowitalls and trolls

As soon as you change it it will get like HUKD which aint a good thing!

On Latest Deals I think the data created by the number of ‘likes’ a deal gets is used to help the deal rise to the top of the Popular Deals list (or Web Page), or conversely to drop into the DDDA (Dead Duck Deal Abyss).

If LD decides not to reward and incentivise ‘likes’, then I think there will be fewer likes awarded overall by the users, and therefore a new improved method of sorting/ranking deals by popularity needs to be found.

To determine which are the good/popular deals, and which are the less good/unpopular ones, I would suggest that new Sort method (or algorithm) should use a combination of:

a) the number of click-throughs to the underlying deal (i.e. views)

b) the number of click-throughs to the deal at the actual retailer (e.g. Amazon, Boots, Next) and

c) the number of ‘likes’ the deal receives

What % weighting should be given to each of a) b) and c) would need testing and tweaking. Eg. 30/50/20

The Sort method should work like a sieve – so that the best deals stay on the top, are more visible, and have longer shelf life. If the new Sort method could track and use actual purchase data too, that would probably be even better, and give the most accurate picture of deal quality.

I agree that by not financially incentivising users to like deals, LD is much more likely to get a more genuine view of whether a deal is good or bad.

Perhaps it would help if, when commenting, users are asked the question – Do you like this deal? YES/NO/DON'T KNOW (If yes then the deal automatically receives a like). I notice people often comment positively on deals but fail/forget to give the deal a like.

So there would be three potential places users can give a deal a ‘like’:

1) On the first mini-deal page (i.e. without needing to click to view the deal)

2) On the underlying Deal Page, where there’s more information about the deal

3) In the Comments Section as soon as a user clicks ‘Write a Comment’ they must first answer a pop–up ‘Do you like this deal? YES/NO/DON'T KNOW’ before being able to add their comment.

Obviously a user should only be able to give a total of one ‘like’ per deal.

Johnny 😊
