Well done to the pilot and crew for getting it down safely . Not a pleasant flight for the passengers ?
It was really amazing that none got hurt either in the plane or on the ground - amazed that with the engine on fire that the passengers on board seemed relatively calm. Does tend to show that the design of aeroplanes has built in safety when it can land with this sort of damage on one engine.
At first I thought it must be a servicing error (forgot to secure the cowling properly after maintenance ) but as they are grounding all 777s with that engine possibly an inherent design fault ?
Golfforall I think they ground the whole series whilst they find out if it was a loose cowling. Better to have them on the ground than up in the air until the airlines find out what went wrong.
davewalsh126 It was metal fatigue in a couple of fan blades which then broke off . So in a way the cowling did its job
Golfforall So probably not maintained very well by the ground crew (or inspected properly on a regular basis)
davewalsh126 All the blades are NDT inspected (like an xray) to detect cracks on a regular basis at intervals set by the engine manufacturer . There's always the chance that a catastrophic failure could still happen between checks .
