Prince Andrew 'begged Ghislaine Maxwell to clear his name' but she refused, report claims

The Duke of York begged Jeffrey Epstein's alleged “madam” to clear his name by publicly defending him but she refused, it has been claimed.

Ghislaine Maxwell is the only other person said to have been present on the night Virginia Roberts Giuffre has alleged she was forced to sleep with him when she was 17.

“Andrew pleaded with Ghislaine to publicly defend him,” a source told the New York Post.

IS this a search of desperation or has she just put him right in it?

Virginia Giuffre, the Prince Andrew accuser, has filed for a civil lawsuit in New York. This will likely bring him a lot more negative attention. It will be interesting to see how this pans out. I doubt he will be visiting the USA again.

I'm surprised more people have spoke about this as when Harry or Meghan fart wrong and people are all over them, yet a potential paedophile in the royal family who has refused to give evidence and its quiet compared Harry and Meghan.

SilverSurfer Your right but I think Meghan & Harry were more relevant and current than Andrew who has been in out of the limelight for many years before this, just like Prince Edward . Does anyone knew where is is or what he's up to, does any really care probably not.

If I was accused of something this bad my first priority would be proving my innocence he is simply trying to avoid a trial. Doesn't seem to be the actions of an innocent man to me

I must admit that when I first saw the footage of him hiding behind the door at the nonce mansion I did believe he was a cringey no user and would be outed, but I always thought he'd escape prosecution, I'm glad he's being prosecuted because he's a really poor liar, and he'll not be wanting to go down without naming a few other high profile names who were all part of this "Let The Canary Sing".

People in a position of power doing what they want and lying about it, the news is getting more like a soap opera, can we exchange him for the hit and run lady. I do feel sorry for the innocent people that get accused, but if you had the resources and opportunity to clear your name you would do it.

Amazing, paying all that money to somebody who he doesn't recall meeting.

As usual it's one rule for the rich and another for the rest of us - get in trouble, simple buy yourself out of it.

Leannexxx These settlements make me very uneasy. I really think money should have nothing to do with these cases and compensation shouldn't be paid because it is a corrupting force. It should be a criminal case and based on evidence rather than who is the most convincing speaker. I've seen enough US courtroom procedures to know its more about the lawyer sometimes than the evidence.

I really think a criminal process should have happened in a independent country maybe New Zealand or Sweden. I'm very suspicious of both sides to be honest. Certainly £12 million is a ridiculous settlement which is basically theft if he is innocent or excessive even if he is.

Most people don't get compensation for crimes against them even attempted murder and other high profile violent crimes all they get is the satisfaction that the criminals are behind bars and sadly as we know many don't even get that. Many people also seem to use these situations to get celebrity status and well paid interviews on TV etc again I really think this should be banned.

Either he is guilty or he isn't and if he is he should be in jail for a few years and no amount of money should prevent that.

This whole trial by media thing is just not the ideal situation. Really the first we should hear about this is when Prince Andrew is sent to jail for the crime and at that point we have a right to find out about it and nothing at all should prevent Prince Andrew going to trial.

I have zero interest in the monarchy and would prefer a republic and don't like any of them but I really can't see how this situation is fair to Prince Andrew if he actually is innocent which I'm not saying he is I'm just not doing the trial by media thing. There is also the way this is polarised in the media but many of these situations can be more grey than black and white. A trial may have revealed the full circumstances and made us understand whose testimony is most flawed.

Innocent until proven guilty might seem like a throw away line but really its got some real importance to it.

Leannexxx Very difficult to fight because it prolongs the media showcase of it. Really this should have been a trial away from the media in a independent country. I personally have very little faith in the US legal system it seems far too commercial a bit like their healthcare system. I really don't know what I would have done in his circumstances but he was either hopeless or dishonest in his interviews but that is the point many are using those interviews to judge him. I don't like him but still feel he has a right to a trial in a country with a decent and fair legal system which sadly isn't the USA.

BonzoBanana I can't speak for other countries, Women or men, but as someone who has been attacked in England I can say justice in this county is unfortunately horrendous, even when you have evidence. Sometimes civil courts cases are easier to pursue although you do then lose the protection of your identity. For some women or men this is the closest you get to justice. I don't think it's about the money it's actually about the little justice you can get and causing the attacker as much grief and damage as you can.

Midnightflower The trouble is the longer the time it takes to go to court the less safe the prosecution is and it becomes a farce. That's why these cases need to be processed immediately to have any chance of reaching a fair verdict in most cases. Sometimes more evidence does become available later on for various reasons but generally evidence fades with time and witness reports become dangerously unreliable when many years have passed. It becomes a justice lottery.

Did Prince Andrew force himself on her or did she willingly have intercourse after being groomed by others or did she just have intercourse willingly but now bitterly regrets that decision later on, now that time has matured her outlook. Did Prince Andrew pretend he forgot her or was it a quick sexual encounter for him perhaps under the influence of alcohol or even drugs and he genuinely didn't remember her at least initially. I have absolutely no idea and certainly can't pre-judge it without any evidence.

I don't believe this £12 million should have been paid personally. It's clear the accusation is very damaging to his reputation and he wanted to move on but that still doesn't mean he was guilty and doesn't mean he wasn't guilty either. It's just hush money but really the legal system shouldn't operate like that.

We need a framework where woman can report such incidents immediately and as time passes that ability diminishes because such convictions would be very unsafe. This whole concept of reporting crimes years later is totally unrealistic. Do you get burglaries where people don't report them for years or any other crime for that matter?

He's absolutely guilty in my opinion. If you were innocent you'd fight to the bitter end to prove it! As usual the rich get away with everything. At least she got compensation and managed to cause him some distress, a small victory but better than many other victims get.

I know this may be against public opinion, but I think that all the rhetoric about wanting to have her day in court was just a ploy to get a bigger payout. This is the 2nd payout she has received.

That are lots of victims of sexual harassment, who battle to get taken seriously....

I'm also interested to know if public money was used. Dispictable if it was.

I agree if he was a normal person, but my understanding is that the publicity was causing embarrassment to the Queen, its a case of damned either way. Like you say if he had done such terrible things why did she settle ?

Either way he is publicly disgraced@Glitterandgold

SilverSurfer That certainly isn't true it could go either way from past cases. Really this needed to be dealt with immediately as soon as it happened, she needed to be examined and the evidence built up for a prosecution. Straight after such a crime is when people are normally most angry, not years later. As far as I understand it she was 17 and the age of consent in the UK where it happened is 16 so its really a question of consent. When these cases happen years later there isn't really much chance of a evidence based trial but that doesn't mean if she is a convincing witness a jury won't convict. There may be more to it at trial but if it all happened behind closed doors with no witnesses its basically him saying she consented and her saying she didn't. To be honest I can't see how it could be fair unless there is more evidence we don't know about yet, you might as well flick a coin. I don't like Prince Andrew so I would probably be biased unfairly.

It's a bit like the Playboy mansion and Hugh Hefner many women reported so called sex abuse years later but other women stated what else were they expecting at the playboy mansion and why does it take years to regret what they did? I mean could there be anyone stupid enough not to think Hugh Hefner was sex obsessed and a sexual predator.

You even get women who starred in pornographic movies claiming they were sexually abused even after being well payed and filling in consent forms. Obviously only a tiny minority but many such stories have hit the paper.

Regretting something later which you gave consent for originally years or even decades before is not rape or sexual abuse surely although totally understand there are moral issues here.

There are a lot of pubs around the country called the Duke of York. Even though many of them were named after royals who held the title before Andrew. The name will still likely become synonymous with him and bring an increasingly problematic association. Last month York Racecourse announced it will be changing the name of the 'The Duke of York Stakes', which is held every May. Even though the race dates back to 1895. It's possible many of the the pubs will feel compelled to change their name. I regularly pass a Duke of York pub that also has a portrait of Andrew hanging outside (seen in linked article below). Now that the settlement has been made the stigma of the accusations is not going to go away. If the pub chooses not to take down the artwork there is a good chance it will be stolen or vandalised by someone in the not too distant future.

😂😂 Considering changing? What's wrong with these people, if your pub is linked to Andrew then its going down the drain unless they change.

I think the girl knew what she was doing at age 17, a young prostitute. Why else would she be taken on a private jet around the world. However, now she’s just basking in the publicity and millions of dollars.
